WOW! Anybody have low blood sugar???
As a diabetic, this story really caught my eye. I woke up with a "44" just this morning. Glad I wasn't driving!
This guy wasn't kidding. He no doubt remembers nothing about this, and the police can't be blamed for their actions. Really unfortunate he let it get so low before driving. But it happens...

Re: WOW! Anybody have low blood sugar???
The cops in Baker City arrested a guy who was wandering around downtown and was incoherent. They thought he was drunk and managed to break his arm in the process. Turned out he was diabetic and was a Nobel Laureate (or something like that) and had just moved to town to live out his retirement.
Oops.

Re: WOW! Anybody have low blood sugar???
FIB,
Get those ducks! LOL!!
I can never remember blacking out while driving the boat!
Hmmmm.... But then I guess I wouldn't would I????

A moment of seriousness here. If you know a diabetic, know the signs of low blood sugar. If you are a diabetic, let those around you know that you are. I have been one for a long long time. It is not something that generally diabetics like to broadcast. But a hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) reaction from TOO much insulin can occur at almost anytime. Usually from exessive exercise and/or forgetting to eat enough after taking insulin. Too many lay people don't understand when that happens a diabetic can not only show those symptoms, but until some carbohydrate (quick acting sugar is best, like juice or sugar) is taken on, the blood sugar can stay low for hours.
Now back to regularly scheduled programming.
If you are always obnoxious and a diabetic, like me, well, you asked for it!

Re: WOW! Anybody have low blood sugar???
Police officers, prior to making a DUII arrest, will ask a person if they are a diabetic. If they are, EMS is dispatched to check his/her blood sugar.
If the driver is unable to answer the question, EMS is still dispatched to check.
Standard Operating Procedure, as taught to officers in DUII classes.

Please don't try to give anybody that is unconscious food. Just call 911 that what they are there for.

Re: WOW! Anybody have low blood sugar???
My brother is "Juvenile Diabetic" He is now 40. He goes into insulin shock nearly daily. He does not monitor his blood sugar as he should. He sometimes becomes violent and abusive during these reactions. Other times he just goes unconcious or semi-concious. We have become experts at recovering him from this state. We use a gatorade type bottle with one of those pull spouts, about 4 ounces of grape juce with two heaping tablespoons of plain sugar. Squirt that mixture into him and 2 or 3 minutes later, it's like nothing happened. He has little or no memory of the event.
I have known many who were diabetic. I have had a touch myself (very high sugar after a long prescription of Prednisone). With careful monitoring of blood sugar, they have few problems.

Re: WOW! Anybody have low blood sugar???
I once worked with a guy with some kind of high-level diabetes (I don't know much about it, obviously). Seemed like we'd have to call an ambulance for him almost weekly. It got so bad he had to go on medical leave. He eventually had a liver and pancreas transplant and poof! No more diabetes. He almost died while on the waiting list, I was told. Yeesh! :depressed:

Re: WOW! Anybody have low blood sugar???
Hog, Now I know the reason you were chasing the black ducks on the lower sandy. You forgot to take your insulin. Was that the same excuse that time on the Wilson and the Clackamas and the Cowlitz.

Re: WOW! Anybody have low blood sugar???
Dick I -
1) Low blood sugar is caused by too much, not too little insulin. 25 years knowing me and you still have it backwards!
2) Which time? You forgot the mid-Columbia, JD, Tounge Point, NF Nehalem, both forks of the Lewis, Washugal, and, OH, WAIT, YOU WERE DRIVING ALL THOSE TIMES!!
For your first story why don't you tell everyone about throwing the bait to the Seagulls at Netarts??
PS - You never did thank me for all that exercise you got digging the sled off that gravel bar that morning. I think you owe me. Body by Jake? Well, not quite but you gotta start somewhere...

Re: WOW! Anybody have low blood sugar???
All insulin-dependant diabetics should carry a Glucagon Emergency Kit with them and let those they are around frequently know that they have one and how to use it. They should also wear a Medic Alert pendant or bracelet so their condition can be ascertained even if they are unconscious.
Long term high blood glucose will kill you eventually.....low blood glucose could kill you today. Test your blood sugar before you drive......a driver with hypoglycemia can be as dangerous as a drunk driver.
