Would you have voted for 28 if......
....it had been specifically marked for education, public safety, etc??
I know why we didn't see a measure exactly like that, just wondering if, first, "NO" voters would have voted differently, and second, if other ideas of why it wasn't set up that way are the same as mine.

Re: Would you have voted for 28 if......
TR,
I did vote yes but have a guess at why it may not have been set up for specific applications.
My thought is that they prefer not to earmark funds because it reduces bargaining power down the road. Dedicated funds are harder to steal from for pet projects.
Let us not forget that our R dominated legislature dipped into the PERs fund a few years back. Of course, now they want all of us Peters to pay their Paul back.
Now that is sound economic theory for you!!

Staydog I agree with what you said here. The Rogue, I really hesitate voting any new or temporary taxes in. I just don't trust our legislators with my or anyone elses money. They write these darn bills and attach a clause that the money could be used for anything other than its intended purpose. Never will agree with that kind of legislation.
To answer your question......you would get a MAYBE from me if it were specifically and irrovacably ear marked for that purpose. Otherwise NO WAY.

Re: Would you have voted for 28 if......
We're not seriously still discussing 28 are we?? Its gone....walk away from the light.
I did not vote for 28 because the bill was not written to indicate specifically where any money would go. It was simply to raise taxes "temporarily" with no clear guidance on the subsequent expenditures. I'm not about to sign a blank check like that. Further, there was no discussion on how to fix the problems that exist. Oregon is a poorly managed state...time to fix that. And its also time to live within their means.

Re: Would you have voted for 28 if......
CT,
If not mistaken, didn't Kulongoski say he would make recommended cuts regardless of 28 passing or not? Didn't he also pledge to overhaul PERS regardless?
Is that not trying to fix the problem? Perhaps not addressing everything you or others percieve as "the problem" but certainly a step in the right directions in this voters mind.
BTW, he who asks others to "walk away from the light" may consider taking the first step.
My guess is we will be talking about 28 for years if not decades...........

Re: Would you have voted for 28 if......
Stray, you are absolutely right...Ted is cutting things like Medicaid regardless. And talk is cheap when it comes to fixing things. But I agree, its a start...I'll be more impressed when I see him do something. There was discussion though about finding cuts somewhere else to avoid the cuts in education and such...but Ted said no, leave them...and I disagree with that. I'll give him time though....and keep my fingers crossed for all of us.
My comment about "the light" was geared towards the "Would you have voted for 28 if..." threads. 28 came up, 28 failed. Lets move forward from here.
Ok...so when was the last fish you caught?

Re: Would you have voted for 28 if......
CT....I had a very pointed purpose in mind when I posted the topic...are people just totally anti-tax of any sort, or would they support some type of very specific ones?
I hope to see, sometime very soon, something like 28, with very detailed tags as to where the money will go. I think that is one of the ways to help get through this crisis.
I was always against Measure 28 from the beginning, on the grounds that it was a chicken**** way out for the legislature, when they knew it wasn't going to pass anyway...although that didn't stop me from voting yes.
I support the governor and legislature's stand on leaving the cuts as is. I honestly don't believe they would have come up with an answer in time....there is already WAY too much work to be done with the next 2-year cycle, and they're just so darn divided...

Re: Would you have voted for 28 if......
Rogue...our powers unite on this. Show me a bill that directs where the money will go, and show me a governor who is cutting the size of state gub'ment, and I'll vote for it.

Re: Would you have voted for 28 if......
I think we all agree it was a crummy way to go and yet another instance of holding ones nose and voting for the better of the bad in our own minds.
Maybe, just maybe one day we will see both funding issues and candidates that we can enthusiasticly support.
Unfortunately, as TR (edit, man....... how could I???  ) reminds us, they are so divided................still.
CT,
Asking when I caught my last fish reeeaaaalllyyyy hurts! Truth is it has been three weeks this coming Sunday and that was just a half pounder! I havent caught an adult fish since November when I got my last summer fish.
