Default A letter from one of our Marines

This made my heart swell and brought tears of pride to my eyes.

God Bless America! (and our fighting men and women)

Krue

An actual letter from home from a marine with the
> multinational force in Bosnia:
>
> Dear Dad,
>
> A funny thing happened to me yesterday at Camp Bondsteel (Bosnia):
>
> A French army officer walked up to me in the PX, and told me he thought we
> (Americans) were a bunch of cowboys and were going to provoke a war in
Iraq.
> He said if such a thing happens, we wouldn't be able to count on the
> support of France.
>
> I told him that it didn't surprise me. Since we had come to France's
rescue
> in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the Cold War, their ingratitude
> and jealousy was due to surface [again] at some point in the near future
> anyway.
>
> I also told him that is why France is a third-rate
> military power with a socialist economy and a bunch
> of pansies for soldiers. I additionally told him
> that America, being a nation of deeds and action,
> not words, would do whatever it had to do, and
> France's support, if it ever came, was only for show
> anyway.
>
> Just like in ALL NATO exercises, the US would shoulder 85% of the burden,
and
> provide 85% of the support, as evidenced by the fact that this French
officer
> was shopping in the American PX, and not the other way around.
>
> He began to get belligerent at that point, and I told him if he would like
> to, I would meet him outside in front of the Burger King and whip his ass
in
> front of the entire Multinational Brigade east, thus demonstrating that
even
> the smallest American had more fight in him than the average Frenchman.
>
> He called me a barbarian cowboy and walked away in a huff.
>
> With friends like these, who needs enemies?
>
> Dad, tell Mom I love her,
>
> Your loving daughter,
>
> Mary Beth Johnson
>
> LtCol., USMC

Nice to see that someone took the time to edit the urban legend from its original form, as it was quite offensive back then.

From your website

True or not, this piece was undoubtedly written by a man.
<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">So?

Your point is?

It is still sort of funny.

I am sorry I will never print anything from my email again God knows I don't want the Geek police to rub it in my face latter.

Krue

However, that website is really cool and I now have a really cool place to check facts.

To use the words in that link, "We figure"
Barbara "lafayette to be convinced" Mikkelson isn't a soldier either - and likely is too caught up in her interpretation of phallic symbolism to ever become one.

Cute story - and the historical part IS true.

I got a sorta similar one in the mail the other day. I'm gonna go ahead and post it. This one has less political content... I certainly didn't write it...

Dear Ma and Pa:

Am well. Hope you are. Kuwait ain't too bad, just a bit dusty and
awful flat. Be sure to tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Army
here beats working for Old Man Reenfield by a mile. Tell them to join
up quick before maybe all the places are filled.

I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6
AM, but am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all
you do before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some things - no
hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay.
Practically nothing. Men got to shave, but it is not bad, they git
warm water.

Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs,
bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, beef, ham, steak,
fried eggplant, pie and regular food. But tell Walt and Elmer you can
always sit between two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus
yours holds you till noon, when you get fed again.

It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on "route
marches," which, the Sergeant says long walks to harden us. If he
thinks so, it is not my place to tell him different. A "route march"
is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys all get
sore feet and we ride back in trucks.

The Sergeant is like a schoolteacher. He nags some. The Captain is
like the school board. Colonels and Generals just ride around and
frown. They don't bother you none. This next will kill Walt and Elmer
with laughing: I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why.
The bull's-eye is near as big as a chipmunk and don't move. And it
ain't shooting at you, like them Ballard boys at home. All you got to
do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your
own cartridges. They come in boxes. Walt and Elmer better hurry and
join now before them local boys get onto this setup and come
stampeding in.

Your loving daughter,
Betty Mae

P.S. Speaking of shooting, enclosed is $200 for barn roof and Ma's
teeth. The city boys shoot (a dice game with a vaguely naught name that gets edited by ifish),but not very good.

Dang, why is it that the best stories are told by gruntin' and cussin' army gals? It makes me wanna lace up my jump boots and head back to Bragg and meet these fine spoken ladies.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Thank you. Then my work has been successful. Far too much false information is passed as truth through email these days that posting it on the forums only expounds the problem. Guess what? I shoot the same stuff down through email, too. It's been awhile since I've had to, and to be truthful it's been a nice silence.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not against the sharing of information. What I am against is tripe such as this which helps breed hatred towards other people based on stereotypes, be them based on region, religion, political leaning, skin color, sexual preference, anything really. We can [be better] people by stopping such behavior.

This piece serves no beneficial purpose, so I have no problem with calling it what it is. If I have rained on your parade, then so be it.

[edited to remind myself that I need to preview before I post]

Geek,

You're not raining on our parade, any more than we are raining on yours. And, yeah, I get a little testy with the holier-than-thou attitude of some countries or groups, but, hell, I get mad at my brother sometimes, yet I would die for him.

Since we're picking on France here, if I remember correctly, France has been a nation or nation-state with almost the same borders longer than any other country I know of. They've been beat up on a few times, but nobody has ever dismembered them. Besides, they have some pretty cool tanks.

Uh...was that gonna be a military parade?

Keep us straight.
