oregon tax question
up here in washington we have about a 9 percent sales tax, but, down "there" you have none so, lets say i get a price on a 9.9 honda outboard in oregon and its the same price i can get it in washington for but without the 180.00 tax so i buy it down there, i guess my question is where do they get the money from in the form of taxes, i realy dont know, is your income taxed to death to make up for not having a sales tax, who is paying for me getting off "tax free" ?

Re: oregon tax question
OR gets my tax money by withholding it from my paycheck, just like federal taxes. They also get the tax from the Corp. taxes paid on the profits of the sale to you.
WA is "paying" for you getting off tax free as is the WA dealer who lost your business.

Re: oregon tax question
boater - you are getting a free ride while in Oregon doing your taxfree shopping. Police, fire, ambulance, roads (unless you buy a tankful of gas while here) and other public services you use (or could use if needed) are paid for by Oregon income & property tax payers. Who benefits? You and the Oregon merchants. Who loses? The State of Washington (and the Oregon taxpayers who subdize your visit).
Come back real soon.

Re: oregon tax question
Lets not forget, the better OR businesses do, the better related/support businesses do and the more people they employee thereby increasing the OR tax base.
Boater, come on down and shop all you want.
Just make sure you pay the $1.00 toll coming across the bridge

Re: oregon tax question
If he buys the motor in Oregon, presumably the dealer makes a profit on the motor, and pays tax on that profit (assuming that his business overall is making a profit, obviously).
Seems to me like there is a transfer of tax revenue from washington to oregon in this case.

Re: oregon tax question
For Oregonians shopping in Washington the flip side is true. We are sales tax exempt. I would like to see our income tax s*******, and replace it with a sales tax.

Re: oregon tax question
Boater, I paid enough money in income taxes in 20 years to cover your visit for the "Privilege" of working there. And so did enough of the other Washingtonians who live in Clark County,WA and make up about the 4th or 5th largest taxpaying county in Oregon, that you shouldn't feel guilty shopping there.
The economic benefit you bestow on Oregon far offsets any "Services" that might be rendered by the State.
I'm not advocating beating Washington states Use Tax Laws, but I am not above going to Portland and stimulating the economy when what I need is not available nearby.
I don't work in Oregon anymore, but I am sure that Clark county residents that work in Oregon breathed a huge sigh of relief when measure 28 failed. It saved them almost 6 million dollars!
