Default Fly fishing on a budget....

I'm new to Ifish, but have been fishing since I was little. I started to throw flies few years ago. But being with limited funds I have been looking for ways to streach my $$. Recently I found a Flugger automatic winding reel in a local Goodwill. It had its origanal box and all of the mfg paper work, including the recite dated 7/1976. I was real lucky as it apears to have never been used, I don't evrn think that it ever had line on the spool..... I am all way interested in way to strech the $$ that I can spend and am looking for new ways to do it.

I also do living history reencatments of the 1800 to 1840 fur trade era. So I am also interest in old Paterns, and old gear, and other historical info on the sport....

Cotten tells us to Fish far and fine. But some time we can find a lunker at our feet

I love fishing old "crappy" gear...in fact, one of my favorite setups is my Wonderod (circa 1953) paired with a Pflueger Medalist 1494...I probably fish that almost as much as I do my modern glass rod or even the bamboo. The gear I use the least are the "modern" graphite rods...crap, now I'm going to have to throw in the Wonderod this weekend...

Tie flies. You will son a fortune. Sure you have to make an investment at the start, but an inexpensive set of starter tools and a few basic materials will set you up for a bunch of flies.

I used a Cortland rod for quite a few years and caught many fish. It was inexpensive but was fine. There are also some great deals that pop up on the internet so keep looking for those.

I started to tie flies when I started to use them. I find great enjoyment when a fish takes a patern that just popped out of my head. I bought a starter set from Orvis to learn the basics from the book that came with the set, Then I went nuts..... When I do the living history reenactments I try to tie old patterns from the 1700 to 1850. Due to new game laws some of the materials need to be altered, but these old patterns still catch there share of fish.
