Embarassement to WA
All of WA people are hiding with our heads stuck in the sand right now hoping the rest the nation doesn't see us.
What was Locke thinking about criticising Bush and his education budget???? hhhmmmm, who just had thousands of teachers protesting out in front of his house due to his cutting of education funds?? Funds that were voter approved!!!

Re: Embarassement to WA
Sinker - I had the same reaction listening to Locke last night. Sure, he's a democrat, but I thought better of him than to stoop to gratuitous party-line, knee-jerk criticism like he did. :depressed:

I try to forget about Murray.
GSA, I don't think better of him. He follows that party all around. He was CLinton's best friend at times. Then again he is chinese.
Rumor has it he's gonna run for president.

I thought he did alright, more realistic than W. "Party-line" criticism is pretty much the task at hand for what he had to do.

Re: Embarassement to WA
While I am not a big fan of Locke, I have to say of the Democratic Gov's around, he is on the 'lesser of the evils' side of things for me.
If you didn't catch it, it should be noted that the 'response' was drafted in advance of the SOTU, so it was not truley a response.
My wife made the comment that he looked 'plastic' during his speech and I would have to agree. The thing I found most dissappointing about his speech was the usualy democratic party rhetoric about abortion, medicare, affirmative action and jobs. (Not that those are bad per se, only that they are not offering solutions). My question is if the Democratic solutions are so good, why is it that states like WA and OR, being governed by Dems, are having so many problems? Oh wait, I forgot, its the Republican's fault and/or its a problem at the Federal level.
As far as Locke gaining visibility on a national scale, I agree this is setting a stage for a possible presidential run. But who knows, the democratic primary will be an entertaining race to see who will bend the farthest left without completely loosing touch with reality.

I'm bashing how much Clinton liked the Chinese. Kinda makes sense that the next Demo. candidate is of chinese ancestry.

Wasn't it Gary Locke himself who made his Chinese ethnicity a central theme in his speech last night?......his immigrant grandfather 100 yrs ago.......worked only a mile away from the gov.'s mansion........who would have thought he could make that journey, etc, etc, etc..............???

Re: Embarassement to WA
Gov. Locke was talking about his ethnicity, which could have been spoken by any one of us since all of our ancestors did come from other countries, save the Native Americans. But he wasn’t saying that he’s a Chinese, like sinker did. There are people who try to make some ethnic minorities feel like they don’t belong here, even after 100 years of living here and making great contributions. By referring to him as Chinese, the implication is that he is not one of us.
GutshotApe, if you don’t understand the difference between someone’s ancestry and nationality, then you’ve got a long ways to go.

Re: Embarassement to WA
Yep, if he was born here, he's an American, same as me. Or as the border guard in Mexico said, "WE are all Americans. You are a NORTH American."
Or, as my pretty little wife says, "How can a human being be considered an ALIEN, much less an ILLEGAL alien."
I look back over this thread and find I don't agree with *all* of you - but if you were all like me it would be boring as hell around here, and messed up beyond repair.
I drink to our differences.

Re: Embarassement to WA

WOW!!! You guys read all kinds of things into a sentence. Or maybe I just don't explain myself that well. Probably a little of both.
As soon as Locke took office Clinton took him under his wing. Clinton also made a ton of money from campaign contributions from Chinese citizens. He tried to sell part of the Long Beach Naval Shipyards to a chinese shipping company that was owned by the chinese government.
Remember that huge wildlife preserve Clinton created in Utah?? The environmentalists went nuts. They thought he cared about the environment. Turns out that preserve sits one of two large clean burning coal preserves in the world. Betcha can't guess where the other is.......................China. Imagine that.
Hhhmmm, a connection here?
My reference to Locke being chinese was in reference to the his relationship to Clinton and the Democratic party.
As far as a governor he stinks.
When he was at the county level he stunk.
I could care less what color or where a guy comes from but when you've got this guys record you stink
This is a man that doesn't care one bit about what the voters vote for.
He axes funding that was voter approved and passed and then rips into Bush for not funding education. Granted, I realize times are tight right now. I work in the aerospace industry. Not sure for how much longer but things are TIGHT where I work. But this was voter approved funding. I guess he shouldn't have spent all that money on a high tech company for Mona Locke's brother to run in Sastop of all places. Golly gee, it went belly-up, to the tune of millions.
That shiny new baseball stadium in Seattle that the voters voted down. He was one of the ones that pushed it through.
Yeah he's got a great record.

Re: Embarassement to WA
You know, I don't think Locke is the best governor that there is. He's pretty non-dynamic, and has dropped the ball on the recent school funding issues.
However, I thought what he did recently with the Washington state budgeting was pretty on target and gutsy. Rather than just taking the wish list of what was spent last year plus (or minus) 10%, he did what managers are supposed to do, which is to lay out priorities, and tell the departments to justify their requests against those priorities. That had nothing to do with Clinton, or Bush, or the dems, or the republicans.
It may or may not work, but it is definitely stepping out of the box, and we need more of that.

Re: Embarassement to WA
sinker,
When you refer an American as a Chinese, it's not political incorrectness, but rather it's ignorance and offensive. I doubt you have much cultural awareness or have any Asian American acquaintances from how you dribble. But it's about time you join the rest of the country and be informed as well as show respect for your fellow Americans. You don't want to be a yokel forever, right?

Re: Embarassement to WA
Well maybe I do want to be a yokel. What's it to ya?
How little you holier than thous know about the people you call names. I have many friends and co-workers that are asian. I have no problem with them coming here. I've heard about the ****** and the murders that went on in the refugee camps. They watched their friends have their stomachs slit open and watched them see their own guts spill out while they died.
I've heard of them having to drink urine because it was the only thing to drink.
Don't you tell me I know nothing of Asian people!!! Some of the best people I've worked with have been Asian!!!
Maybe I should have referred to our great governor as Chinese-American.
Do you refer to blacks as African-Americans? Or is the proper term negroes these days?
Enlighten me all you holier than thou sophisticated people. God forbid I should look ingnorant and offensive again!!

Re: Embarassement to WA
Sinker,
The more you speak the more it becomes evident how ignorant you are, so perhaps I was wrong when I said it was offensive. If you don’t know any better, I guess it’s hard to blame you for your lack of understanding.
You say you know some Asian friends who came here from deprived conditions in their country, and they may be the only Asians contacts you have. But the Asian American friends I have are doctors, lawyers and engineers who resent being called Asians when they were either born here or became naturalized citizens decades ago.
You’re still clueless as to how this discussion started. We’re talking about Gov. Locke, who is a fourth generation Chinese American, thus an AMERICAN. Let me make this as clear as possible for you: Gov. Locke is an AMERICAN, not Chinese. Once they obtain their citizenship, they become Americans. And you need to know the difference.
Bringing up terms like Negroes and blacks are totally irrelevant in this case since they do not distinguish one’s nationality.

Re: Embarassement to WA
sinker,
It seems like you have a narrow and condescending attutude toward Asians. But, l agree with Kilgore that there are many Americans of Asian descent who are highly successful and are fully Americans.
I know I would never call them Asians because it's simply wrong to do so.

Re: Embarassement to WA
I think Locke did a real nice job of reading the prepared speech. On the other hand, W stumbled a bit and that is now expected. They both looked sincere. I wonder if both were understanding what they were given to say?
