Default Outboard engine charging question?

This may be a rookie question, but I am having a brain -malfunction-. I have a 1987 Johnson 140 outboard. How do the batteries get recharged by the engine? does it feed back through the main ***. cable off the engine?

Thanks
Mike

Default Re: Outboard engine charging question?

Yes.
You can also check the charging circuit by putting a volt meter on the red lead and measuring to the black lead. You should see 14v or so when charging. If the system has twin charge coils and twin coil leads, you can disconnet them and measure each seperately to gnd/blk lead. Some times one of the coils (or regulators) will be damaged and your only getting half the charge amps it should output when running.
