Re: Favorite Suds
Rogue Brutal Bitter has always been one of my favorites. But you gotta make sure your drinking a fresh batch. Right now Deshutes has a Cinder Cone Red that is quite delicious. I only drink our Oregon microbrews as they are the best beers in the world
Been to all of the breweries and brewpubs. Rogue and Deshutes are my favorite brewers. With Full Sail right behind. There are so many good beers available that it is hard to name them all. And sometimes different batches vary.
What I want to find is a good draft Ginger Beer. I make my own ginger ale but I have not been able to put together that perfect recipe. Any recipes to share?

Re: Favorite Suds
I personally love Full Sail Amber above all others. However, it has a nasty after effect that causes my wife to ban it from the house. Something about paint peeling from the walls. Red Hook ESB is a strong second, along with Alaskan Amber.
In general, I prefer microbrew bitters and pale ales, which any brewer knows are virtually the same thing. I also like a good alt, and a good medium lager.
On raft trips in the backwoods, Miller Genuine Draft in cans is our beer of choice. Not because I think it is a particularly tasty brew, but there is traditiona in my group around it. The black and gold can has a special place in our hearts.

Re: Favorite Suds
I couldn't give a particular brewery, but rather, I have favorite styles. SWMBO and I are into the darker beers. Her mantra, "If you can see through it, it ain't worth drinking."
I homebrew mostly stouts and porters, and usually have three 5-gallon kegs on tap at home. I occasionally do a bitter or pale (they are pretty close, Silver Hilton), and one nice malty alt once a year. Hard to find a genuine alt here in the states, however, Alaskan Amber is relatively close.
I will agree that Oregon has some mighty fine breweries, but don't sell Washington short. I will concede, however, that Oregon usually has a few more medals coming out of the Great American Beer Festival each year, notably Rogue, some pizza place in Portland (the name escapes me), and the Pelican on the coast.
The thing that amazes me is to be in a pub with 20 or so tap handles from local brewers and see some guy come in and order a BudMillerCoors. Why limit yourself? I rarely drink the same beer twice in a row because there is far too many to choose from. Life is too short to drink the same beer over and over.
What I'd really like to see is more cask conditioned ale being served in America. That, to me, is the absolute best the ale world has to offer.
I could go on, but that's my 2¢ worth.

Harley, I used to love Widmer Alt, which you can't get up here. Back in the days when I brewed, Alt's were one of my faves. Don't brew anymore - not enough time.

Re: Favorite Suds
i'd have to say that deschutes' mirror pond is one of my favorites. i like it even more on cask at the twilight room in north portland. sometimes i wish i still lived up in that neck of the woods. i haven't found anyone else who carries it on cask.
after that, it's more about which brewer's beer is on sale this week, in order of preference:
deschutes
bridgeport
firehouse (they're a new kid on the block. i really like their porter and ipa. don't really care for hefeweizen to begin with and i can't remember what their other one is.)
also, a lot of it has to do with time of year. it's hard to crack open a stout and enjoy it when it's 85 degrees and sunny out and you've just finished mowing the yard. ipa's in the winter time are alright but that time of year i'd rather grab a dark porter.
i love the rogue dead guy ale when they have it on sale. i haven't seen the brutal bitter yet. anyone know where in PDX i can find it?

KETA,
It's all about genetics!!!
hhhmmm, maybe it's not 24oz, I just said that because someone else mentioned that number and it's equal to 2 beers.
How many oz in a fifth? It's 750ml but I can't remember the conversion ratio to convert it to oz.

Re: Favorite Suds
Massive amounts of full sail amber ale on tap.
Other than that, I often went with my own version of a black and tan made with 2/3 rogue mocha porter (or sheakespear stout) and 1/3 oregon golden.
If it doesnt have 500 calories per pint its worthless, Ive got a lot of work to do if Im ever going to build an adequate toolshed.
I quit drinking though. slipped once since New years, and will likely not slip again.
fifth = 25.6 shots; 25.6 ounces; 1.6 pints; 0.8 quarts; 0.75706 liters

Re: Favorite Suds
Black Butte Porter
Ruby Red
But, the all time favorite....mine own homebrew
Heavy Metal,
What kind of ginger beer you after?
Try this:
3.5lbs light malt extract
2.5lbs honey
2oz Cascade Hops (Saaz for less IPA-ish beer)
2-4oz fresh grated ginger (I'd lean toward 2oz)
Lager yeast
Haven't tried this one, but it looks good. I would use a hopping schedule of 1oz for 45min, 1/2 oz for 12min, 1/2 oz for 3min.
Let me know if you try it.

Re: Favorite Suds
My top 5 have to be:
JUBELALE - Deschutes
BLACK BUTTE PORTER - Deschutes
IPA - Bridgeport
 MIRROR POND - Deschutes
 Oktoberfest - Full Sail
In that order.
Now when it comes to fishing beer my list changes to Miller High Life in the fish box!
Cheers,
Z's-
