Blue smoke is oil. But help us out here Mania. Give some particulars. What year? Approximately How many hours? Probably doesn't matter, but what brand and weight of oil?
Off the top of my head I'd say the rings are shot. Has a compression test been run?

Re: honda 8hp 4 stroke smokes
My Yamaha T8 will do the same thing if I forget and run it all the way down to the stop. Once I learned to keep it off the stop and in a closer to vertical position while trolling I stopped killing all the mosquitoes. That may not be your issue but it might be worth checking. I seriously thought I had a bad motor.

Re: honda 8hp 4 stroke smokes
Could be the result of a bad thermostat which would cause the motor to "make oil". Also could be the way it is positioned while traveling, dumping oil into the carb. Mine would dump oil all over when tipped when I was having thermostat problems.

I think he's talking about the tilt. Try keeping it as straight up and down as possible.

That doesn't sound right. If the thermostat is stuck open it wont get up to temp and if it doesnt get up to temp it will make oil. I'd replace the thermostat.

Re: honda 8hp 4 stroke smokes
If the oil smells like gasoline, if the oil has been diluted slightly with gasoline, oil will pass the rings more easily causing smoke, just thinking outloud here. If the oil is actually low by, say, a cup+/-...but gasoline has it showing full, that's enough gas to dilute the oil enough to pass the oil ring? If the oil ring, or rings are worn, or a combo of all the above?
I've had two honda kickers in the past, one earliest model 7.5 and a 1990ish 9.9. they both smoked, not terrible but smoked. My '01 Merc 9.9 gives up a pretty good puff of smoke at starting, not while trolling, but give it the gas or rev in neutral durring the day it will smoke a bit. It trolls low and slow all day long so I'm not concerned.
As far as peeing "Ice Cold" are you running in ice water? The tell tale may not come off the head, it may come directly from the impeller. I don't think the tell tale on my Merc 75, or 9.9 is warm, I don't think I've noticed it steaming when sturgeon fishing in January.

Re: honda 8hp 4 stroke smokes
Good luck with that Honda, I had one for years that never ran right for trolling. It left me stranded dozens of times. I finally replaced it with a Yamaha and that fixed all my problems. My mechanic says that the Honda motor was designed with a huge flaw. The carburetor is too far from the engine and the engine will not run well when trolling. I ran the hottest plugs that I could and the hottest thermostat that I could, but eventually the rings wore out and the compression dropped. My calls and e-mails to Honda never did any good. I probably won't buy anything that says "Honda" on it ever again.

Re: honda 8hp 4 stroke smokes
My 96 Honda 8hp smokes a bit until it's warmed up. Mine trolls low and slow all day pushing my 07 20Ft Seahawk. I like this motor so much when I had it on my drift boat that I had a 150HP Honda put on my Seahawk. I also have a Honda lawn mower, pressure washer and 2K generator. I always ran the motor out of gas when it was being stored for long periods of time when not being used on the drift boat. After I got the new boat I had it tuned up and the guy also adjusted my valves. Granted they are cold blooded but after a few minutes it purrs.

Re: honda 8hp 4 stroke smokes
My hit list
1. Is it low on Oil ?
2. Worn rings
3. Did you "over fill" the oil ?
** Honda's will burn excess oil if you overfilled the resevoir.

Re: honda 8hp 4 stroke smokes
Mania,
The pee coming from my 9.9 2002 Bigfoot is cold too. It was cold even before I fabricated my hotsink. So don't let that be your "guide" on whether or not your motor is warming up.
Whats happening is the impeller is taking in WAY more water than the engine needs for cooling. It "dumps" this excess overboard through the pee hole. After cooling the motor, the little water actually needed (for the cooling) gets "mixed" with the water already going overboard.
BTW, the pee hole is simply for a quick visual check on the cooling system. If it ain't peeing then you have major problems and you better shut it down immediately.

Re: honda 8hp 4 stroke smokes
All of this is good info.
After thinking of this off and on today, I remembered some of my automotive teachings. Years ago it was discovered by the automotive engineers that piston rings seat much, much better and decrease "blow-by" if there is a negative pressure inside the crankcase. So they came up with the PCV, or Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. (Some call it the Pollution Control Valve, as the pressure that is developed inside the crankcase was simply vented to the atmosphere. But that's a different story for another time.) Basically, a PVC valve creates this negative pressure by tapping into the vacuum created under the carburator.
I do not know what kind of configuration in on your motor, but I wouldn't be surprised if something is either plugged, disconnected, or missing.
Just thinking outloud and trying to add to the discussion.

My motor was a 2000. I bought it because the old ones ran so great. I guess it was a "new" design.

Re: honda 8hp 4 stroke smokes
Most people OVER FILL the oil on Yamis. It should be in the MIDDLE of the cross patch on the dipstick. NOT the TOP of the cross patch. If you fill it to the top of the cross patch it is too full.
