I have Windows me.

I was having trouble with my virus software so I shut it down, 2 days later I got an e mail from an I fisher and downloaded it, And nothing was there after downloading. Right after I did I read the fishing geek post about the virus that was being sent to I fishers. Not my day. After that things have been going real slow if at all. I run scan disc and it gets about 95%done and starts telling me that a hole bunch of files are missing or have errors. I cant shut down or restart using the start button It just asks if I want to wait or end task. never shuts down. In order to scan for the kelz virus or install the new Norton Anti-virus is tells me with windows m e I need to go in to turn off the system restore feature then restart. I shut the restore feature off but I can shut down without a double control alt delete or push the on/off switch but when I do either the restore setting will not save. So I cant run either virus proglam. Now , I see the comp. will not do a disc defrag or go online most of the time. I also cant open a lot of tasks like cd creator,my computer and others most of the time. I am at the end of my rope on what I can fix and am giving up. Any ideas? Free trips to the first person to fix it. Dan

Yep, it sounds like a brain transplant is needed. Back up your files that you can get to. I hope you have them backed up on a regular basis. You will need a reformat/fdisk and start anew. Windows ME is not a good operating system. Go with win 98 or Win 2k and you will be much happier and a much more stable machine. Also, is this a White box or is it a commercial unit like Dell, Gateway, etc....The whitebox version is much easier to repair....Gateway does provide an image disk so that it can be restored to original setups. Not sure about Dell. I build and maintain all my machines and do so for others. I can also give you my brothers nr. He lives in Spokane and works for Microsoft on a help desk line. He may be able to walk you through this. Lots of other good folks around here on the site also. If not send me an email and I would be happy to help with the re-install etc...

Hey Madwizerd,
I too have windows ME, and it really sucks big time! Everyone I ask says so and that other windows operating systems are much better.
I have had the same error messages you mentioned come up on my screen; One thing that I noticed helped was to unplug the whole system from the wall and completely deny power to the system for about 15 minuets. Then plug everything back in and try to start over. Let me know if this helps, it helped my system.

Madwizerd-
I may have missed something on your situation, but have you downloaded the
klez removal tool... aka fixklez ??
Your antivirus software WILL NOT WORK
by itself to remove klez.. you must download
and run the removal tool using the exact steps they give. Here is the link for Norton:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com...oval.tool.html

I've gone through this on Windows 98 and Windows XP on a number of machines, home and work. It sucks, but once you get rid of it and update your antivirus it catches it every time, but you can't do anything until you run the removal tool.

Good luck.

Some nasty virus stuff out there Dan. Been hit by Klez, Trogon Horse, bugbear just to name a few. They are a real pain to get rid of too.

FixKlez. quarentines the files for you and should have you up and running. Glad Boedy could get ya going again. I would have helped you but you know the rules of fishing with Dan. Remember? he he he.... Glad you are back up and running. Been missing your posts.

Lepper, Unless you're thinking you can get an Enterprise Agreement license, for which you or the combined members certainly do not qualify, you're blowing some serious smoke. Only deal you could get would be on some illegit copies that some vendors out there try to push. I've seen way too many vendors get popped by MS over the years. They buy it from offshore sources who dupe it, making it look real and then that vendor plays dumb and passes it on to his customers. Been there, seen that.

You mean that Microsoft doesn't use a black Sharpie to label their CD's?

Pretty funny TFG, but the sad truth is, neither to the disk dupers. They even do a pretty fair job on the halograms. Not a problem for those linux geeksters out there though is it!
