Default Wickiup Help

I usually fish wickiup once or twice a year and have been for a while and I catch fish but not consistantly or in any great numbers. Usually when I fish for kokes I use a lake troll pulling a wedding ring in either green, red, or blue. I am going down there in 2 weeks and would like to increase my chances a little. Usually I tip my ring with some corn or the wickiup sandwich. Am I missing anything that could increase my catch?

It's still early, dont fish too deep. Follow the movement of the fish, I was down there on opening and it seemed like they traveled the same way the wind was blowing. Hootchies matched with a dodger, experiment with colors as the day goes on. Not just white corn, try Firecorn in pink or red or even try Gulp maggots. Be willing to stick it out, fish are nice and big this year but so far has not been a fish-a-minute bite. Most importantly....relax and have a good time! Remember, if your going down there strictly for feesh....I suggest the supermarket (saves on gas)!!!

Hope this helps. Enjoy and leave some for the rest of us. Be Safe!

Thanks alot....I just love going down there...have been making fishing/camping trips down there since i was about 10. My wife and I just like getting out of town and relaxing...and fishing is a good way to relax. I know its kind of a long drive from the pdx area but its well worth it....we both love the high desert.

And don't worry about me catching all the fish...a 10 fish day down there for me is a good day.

Agreed! I'm down there again 17th-19th. I'd be more then happy with a 10 day. I'm tryin harder for a brown though this time. We'll see how it goes. By the way, you should do a search for something like "kokanee tackle box" or something similar. I found a ton of usefull info on colors, lures, etc here on Ifish. Plus, many pictures have been uploaded by members showing their favorite colors to match w/each flashers, dodgers, jigs, etc. Have fun...but give yourself a couple hours...a TON of info is available.

Nice, I am giong the weekend of the 16-17. I tried for browns last year on opening weekend....first time really dedicating to browns down there and got skunked...water was too cold I think...only 36 deg. Good luck and I will leave some fish for you.

I have fished Wickiup since I was a kid. My most effective area is in the chanel just before Davis creek meets the Deschutes channel. From there, around the bend towards the dam you will find some islands or structure. Depending on the wind, there are some good spots all of the way down to the dam. The only really effective way to fish it IMO is with downriggers and a good mapping fishfinder. Latter in the fall you can fish up the channel and do fairly well.

Just got back from Wickiup today after 2 1/2 weeks. Save your time fishing for browns. Most were 18 - 20 inch long and looked like snakes. Best fish posted at Twin on opening weekend was 6 lbs. 8 oz. After catching several browns, I decided it was more worth the effort and easier to catch several 14 - 16 inch kokes. Just sounds like a good trade off to me.
