My last Klamath Lake report
Well guys this is it. I am moving away and done fishing the wonderful Upper Klamath Lake. I have had a great time over the last few months catching some of the most beautiful trout of my life. I learned a lot from threads on here, talking to other fishermen and asking around. That first fish was in sideways snow, and some of the others were also the same. I spent more than one day breaking ice out of the eyelets on my pole and truly have learned a lot.
I love the lake and will be back for sure, there are so many big fish that I just can't see myself not coming back. I thank you all for the encouragement and tips as well.
So last week I was fortunate enough to fish a few times. The weather was up and down and the best bites were on the windless days. the water has turned pretty brown, but the fish seemed to love a nice frozen minnow with a little anise or shrimp oil. Although originally I fished Eagle Ridge a lot, I changed my tactics and started fishing afternoons at Putnam's Point. I have no real reason so conceal my strategies anymore so here we go.
Getting to the lake around noon seemed to be the ticket, fish bite all day but later seemed to be better (and a bit warmer). half ounce of weight, two foot leader, size 2 hook, and a big fat minnow. Throw it out and let the current drift it slightly. Fishing was pretty slow, but when I hooked up they were great. I had the great pleasure of hooking four fish throughout the week and netting another for another guy. Fish averaged around 4 pounds, and the one I netted for the other guy went 7.
All you locals have a great fishery and it has been a pleasure to learn a new place as well as meet some great people and catch some big fish. Things have come up, I have no job, running out of money, and the girl I moved down there for has decided that her independence is worth more than me. I have no regrets, just feel that God is telling me to move back to my roots and take some time to be me.
As I said above, I will be back! I will be back this summer more than likely to fish your rivers. For now I will have to make the change to smaller sized fish in Foster and Green Peter, and steelhead in the Santiam. It feels good to be back with my family and friends as well. I wish you all the best of luck, and hope the big ones continue to bite. If you need more details on how I fished feel free to PM although I have not perfected anything and have just been fortunate enough to get a few here and there.
Klamath is a beautiful place, the weather is nice, and the blue skies are gorgeous, unfortunately the job market wasn't what I had in mind, and the small dramatic events just are saying to get out. I will be driving down tomorrow and getting the last of my things, but I vow that this will not be my last post about that lake, only for a short time, while I get things figured out. Thanks again to all, and have a great fishing season!
