Default Swift 5/2

Couldn't say it was as lights out fishing as it was last Sat. but still it's pretty hot! We had to expand the trolling area a little- it seems like they may have spread out some now. It was pretty great weather midday for awhile:

Of course it's May in the mountains! Can't last forever!

Two of us caught 106 trout and two bull trout-carbon copies of last weeks- 18-20 inchers. Most of the trout were caught on the same fly as last week, but for awhile we had to use a black wooly bugger to get them to hit. That worked well for 2 or 3 hours.

The biggest excitement of the day was when we were reeling in a trout in the river- there was a big splash on the surface near the fish! We saw a big white shape just slashing back and forth at the trout- it was the belly of a big bull trout- the trout was kinda hooked on the outside of the gill and it was coming in in a sort of death spiral motion- that bull trout was after it! Splashed and slashed again and then disappeared. This is what our hearts were doing! WOW!

Later in the same area I hooked a trout and played it a little in the fast current- we took the boat out of gear to float down to the fish. Oh crap-I'm snagged I said- it stopped wiggling and is stuck. As we got almost over it, I felt a little wiggle again but solid resistance at the same time- I must be around a tree limb or something- then we saw a big fish dancing around by the trout underwater- then my fish popped loose- that bulltrout had it in it's mouth and just let go!!! Holy cow those things ARE HUNGRY TODAY!

The day ended kinda like this:

We left at 9pm and got back to town at 11:30pm after a short nap on the way to keep the eyes open! Not a thing to complain about

Very nice photo's. I always find it takes an effort to keep the camera handy but well worth it for the memories at the end of the day.

When you refer to "the River", what marks that area? I usally fish the area accross from the ramp and west to the first major peninsula. Is there a clear marker that lets one know you are in an area with gear restrictions?

Thanks,

Thumbs up Re: Swift 5/2

Nice report and great pictures - I have been thinking about those big bulls... whey dont you take along some purple sized herring next time - plug cut those herring up and drag them through the slot a couple times!

Yes, if you go east instead of west- it's just out of sight around the corner. Stay to the left side of the lake (across from all the homes/boat docks) and you'll see and orange marker ball marked "Fishing Boundary".
From there up to the bridge is the "Selective Gear" area. Watch carefully as you get near there for sandbars and stumps!

Well, couldn't do that of course in the "Selective Gear" area- no bait allowed. And it's illegal to actually target bulltrout in Swift. Since I have hooked a couple rocket sized rainbows (not landed!) and a nice cutthroat over 20" on big spoons or hotshots- I don't feel too totally guilty trolling those lures- even though most of the time it's bulltrout that you'll catch. I would not feel right though using herring in the general area of the mouth of the river where bulltrout stage before heading up the river to spawn.

I might give your idea a try though down west of the ramp in the main lake. I have heard rumours of many huge rainbows being netted in test nets used by WDFW. Might be THE way to entice one of them.
