Default "CHEAP" digital camera

Looking for ideas on what I should purchase for a simple digital camera.

I am not looking for incredible quality, just something that I can take a quick pic and easily upload to ebay. I am beginning to sell quite a bit there, and always have to bum a camera off my brother.

I have seen thse kinds of cheap digital cameras for as little as $20.00. If they work for my needs, thats great. I just want good software to use as well.

I am going to purchase a good quality camera later in the spring, I just want something now to take pics for ebay.

Any thoughts on the "el cheapos"?

I tried one... Took it back. The picture quality was awful and no amount of editing helped. I had bought one of the ~40.00 ones. Ended up biting it and getting the CoolPix 2500 LOVE it!

i agree, if you are not going to print them out then stick with a cheaper one. i wish i had not sunk all the money into a spendy one.

Goto ebay and bid on one. I won a auction on a Palm Pilot valued at $250 for $61. Bid on a bunch before I finaaly won. It can be done especially on a low end unit like you are looking for.

I have a suggestion that might or might not work for you. If you are just going to use some pics for Ebay why not take regular pictures, say one per item or whatever, and then take that film roll to your local camera shop and have them put on CD. That way you can use them for your auctions. I have bought 2 digital cameras in the last 2 years and went through a whole bunch of reviews etc to find a 'good' one. The fact is, for under $50 you cannot get a very good digital camera. But for $100-$200 you can get a very good one for your purposes. If you can live with just having your pics put on CD for now (I think Fred Meyers does this), u can save your money for your camera purchase later. If you have any questions feel free to email me

I have a JamCam that was like $40.

I used today for the picture of robert's boat.

I have also used for numerous sales on Ebay.

Geek!

Did some research, went to Wal-mart and looked it over. That is a sweet deal. I ordered it online and am picking it up in a couple hours from the local Office Depot.

Thanks for the coupon and the advice.

For the price it really IS a sweet deal. Sure, it doesn't have the optical zoom which is cool but for less than $75 it's a great camera to get you into digital photography. And with 128 meg memory cards going for $50 all over the `net you'll have a card big enough to store some serious photos. I'd tell y`all to think of me at Christmas but that's already passed so that's life.

Thanks again!

That's a helleva deal at that price, however, is not rated very high in most tech journals or in user reviews. Here is one of 'em

I say it's always good to have opposing views to gather an accurate information on just about anything. However, in case of new hi-tech toys, averge users are limited to just one or two items which severely limits their ability to compare the facts, thus people who conduct a more comprehensive reviews are in much better position to render a better perspective.

For the price you won't find a better deal on a (relatively) cheap camera. Period. If folks have $200 then the options open up quite a bit more. However, we're talking cheap so I'm going to stick by my recommendation.

Now, as far as memory is concerned, this camera takes the Secure Digital format which is a bit more expensive than Compact Flash. The best deal that I could find was at CompUSA where you can get 128 megs of PNY flash card for $44.99 after a $15 mail in rebate. Not a bad price, really.

No question about it. It is by far the best deal I can find on that price/performance range of digital camera. It's just that the picture quality is said to be quite poor, so just beware!

Most dealers are selling it for about $135, so it's an awesome deal. Go buy, buy, buy; and help the surly economy!

so am I handicapped? I tried this and upon final checkout the camera price magically jumps to $140something. then the coupon takes off $25 but that still leaves alot more price than the original screen
Did they up the price?

Make sure that you don't have anything else in the shopping cart, and also make sure that your quantity is only one. Otherwise the price should be listed as above. Not sure why it wouldn't be, as it's still working for me here.

I tried to buy one of the OfficeDepot hp cameras last night online but it didn't take. Today I tried again but the price wasn't right - $140 or so.............finally gave up and called the local OD store and they couldn't get it to work either but did confirm the $97 price and took the coupon number and set one aside at the service counter. I picked it up this afternoon for $72.90.

Now I found out that my Windows 95 is so far gone that the camera won't work on it. So, until I get a new 'puter, or something, you won't get to see any of my fine fotos. Of course, there's a very good chance I won't be ble to figure out how to post 'em anyway  .

It's hell having been born too soon.

does anybody know if there is a digital camera out there where the file does not have to be resized for uploading into ifish? all my pics come out smaller than everyone elses when i use irafan. i am using 75 dpi, and i am at 500 wide but it is still over the 100kb limit.

how about the camera Geek is talking about, do you have to resize with the HP camera?

OK, just got back from Office Depot and will soon catch up with the 21st century. Spent $712 on a new 2.0 GHz, 256 MB DDR SDRAM, 40GB harddrive, (huh?) etc. etc. 'puter, WindowsXP, Microtek 4850 scanner, etc. Stuff is supposed to be shipped in a week or so. Then we'll see if I can get it hooked up correctly and online. And then............................

Boy, that $72 camera sure was a bargain......

Yes, Geek, its not a lot when you consider the amount of use I'll get out of it. I only wish there was a decent instruction manual to go along with all the new gear. All the manufacturers apparently assume we all know about computers - but we all don't. We're supposed to pick it up as we go but some things aren;t that obvious. I'm sure there are things and features on my present setup that I'm not using. I.e., what is "turbo" button on my 'puter for? What is a file? Etc, etc.

Anyway, thanks for the tip on the camera deal. I needed a new 'puter anyhow.

Yeah, I thought so. That new computer should pick up and move pretty well for ya, though. And XP comes with some digital photo tools that make it pretty easy to work with.
