Wow, it looks as if you could fish off the flat platform.

As a side note, the partially-sunken ship has been struck two further times since then. Talk about doomed.

Oh, and it was hauling Beamers.

and Volvos and Saabs...about 2900 all together. They're pretty darn nice cars, I hear.

Anyone want to join me on a salvage :grin: mission?

|| MV TRICOLOR - PRESS RELEASE #2
There were no personal injuries when MV TRICOLOR collided with the container vessel KARIBA 20 nautic miles north-northwest of Dunkerque and sank earlier this morning. The 21 crewmembers that were picked up by the tugboat BOXER, have arrived Dunkerque and passed the mandatory medical inspection. The 3 crewmembers that were picked up by KARIBA, are expected to arrive in Antwerpen later this afternoon.

So far, there has not been reported any bunker leakage from TRICOLOR.

TRICOLOR was carrying 2,862 cars from Saab, Volvo and BMW as well as 77 units of RoRo-cargo which consisted of tractors, escalators, cranes and crane parts.

"First of all, I am very happy that the crew is safe", says Managing Director Wilhelm Wilhelmsen of Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA. " Of course we are sorry for the loss of the ship, but on the other hand we are content that there is no oil leakage from the vessel that can cause any environmental damage. There will probably be a Maritime Court of Inquiry, and we do not wish to speculate as to the cause of the accident at present time".

The insurance value of the cargo has been estimated to approx. USD 40 - 50 mill. The vessel is insured for approx. USD 40 mill

*************
Bummer. I wouldn't want to be their insurance carrier right about now.
I saw one of their ships over at T4 when I was at Shore Terminals a few weeks ago. Looked just like this one, except it wasn't laying on its side. Kinda hard to miss those 15 foot high letters on the side. Somehow I don't think this is the kind of "name recognition" they wanted.
Is it me or do I see an oil slick? And I don't see a boom set up around it.

Default Pic of sinking ship

"The Norwegian-registered cargo ship Tricolor lies on its side Dec. 15 at the mouth of the Dover Strait, separating England and France. The MV Tricolor and its multimillion-dollar cargo of luxury cars sank in French territorial waters after a collision with the Bahamas-registered container ship Kariba in thick fog Dec. 14. All the crew members were rescued."

"Accidents" like this make me sick. Who gives a rats hiney about the cars. We do see a oil slick, I believe, with no boom to contain it. When the ship does go down it will create a vaccum like effect and suck things down with it. If it went down or goes down slowly the vacumm affect will be greatly reduced. This may be why there doesn't seem to be a boom around the ship. We are ruining our enviroment. I am in no way a member of some enviromentalist group. I just want my kids to enjoy life here on earth, without being poisoned.

I read in another press release that the Tricolor is lying in 25m (about 80') of water. It's about as sunk as it's gonna be. I also read that a salvage crew started drilling into the hull so they can pump off the bunker fuel. Glad to see they got right on it. (I'm also glad I'm not on that crew!) When that stuff cools off it's like pumping wet bubble gum. I have to handle it at work on occasion and I hate it. The Einsteins' responsible for the New Carissa waited too long to pump off the oil and we all saw the results. I hope the French have better luck.
