Need help naming my new puppy!!

Hey all. I just brought home a beautiful (but bratty) 8 week old purebred black lab puppy and am having the hardest time picking a name for him. I am looking for all suggestions! Also, for all of the dog owners out there I am also looking for advice on what to feed him. Currently he is eating Eukanuba puppy food, but I have been reading and hearing about all of these natural diets that are sold in the frozen dept of the higher end pet stores. My last dog died of cancer 5 months ago and who knows, maybe it was because of all the crappy kibble out there. Thanks everyone and am looking forward to some reply's! :smile:

Well to stay on theme with your name here, how about Kodiak?

I have had two pets die from cancer in the last two years, vet said it was just a coincidence, sucks non the less. Hope you have many great years with the new pooch!

We had a black lab when I was a kid.. actually several. Suzie Big Foot was one, Nig was the other. I don't think Nig would be politally correct anymore. Might get you into trouble. But he was the best dog. He would grin at you! :grin:

My sister's family has a lab now. It was supposed to be her daugher, Heidi's dog. She had a heck of a time coming up with a name. Finally she came up with Buster. Buster fits him.

Take your time and see what his personallity is like. When a name fits, you will know it.

Can you post a picture of him?

I am looking for a female Aussie puppy, if anyone knows of one, let me know!

Actually, instead of using newspapers for him to pee and poop on, I have been using an orange and black OSU beach towell that I used to use to clean up spilled oil and gas in the garage... and the funny thing is I swear I see him grin when he lifts his legg over it!!

I had a black lab about 6 years ago. He grew to about 120 lbs. Big genes I guess. But we called him "Buster" great name for a black lab. Our newest buddy is a yellow and his name is "chip" He looked like his dad that he is a chip off the ol block. I'll tell ya as far as food, we have feed both our labs the kirkland lamb and rice, It's about $16.00 a bag for 40 lbs, from Costco. If we feed chip anything else he looses the hair off his butt cheeks. I guess thats what you call them. Anyways good luck with the name and you will love your lab.

Instead of newspapers in a corner, definately kennel train him! Best few weeks of training you can do with a puppy! Basically buy a big travel kennel, and partition it off so he only has a small area to sleep in. Put this kennel near a outside door. Dogs don't like to go where they sleep, so as soon as you come in, let him out of the kennel and right outside. NO DELAYS! Telling him the whole time "outside" and "potty" etc to reinforce that. The accidents will be far and few between with this method. As they get bigger, make the partition a little bit bigger. If you give them too much room it defeat the purpose of kenneling them. It only took 4 or 5 weeks with our new pup and he was fully potty trained. After the kennel he would still head right to the door to let you know it was "outside" time. Have fun with your new family member!!

Whatever name you choose, you have to stand on your front porch and yell it out three or four times. If you are okay with the neighbors hearing you, go for it. As at some time in this dogs life you WILL be yelling his name.

My girlfreind has three labs, two yellow boys and a black female. Their names are Kobe, Amery and Julie. I came up with the Amery name, its short for Amirillo which means yellow in espanol. I don't think that anyone other than you can name your dog for you, its just something you gotta go with but I do have a couple of suggestions; Bandit, Killer( you wouldn't belive the looks you will get!! :grin: ) Or maybe Tux? Just some thoughts, good luck.

Eukanuba is good stuff. I can see it in the teeth and coat of my dog compared to others of the same age but different diet. It also costs about the same once you figure out how much cheap stuff for a meal vs Eukanuba.
Names... If I die before I awake , feed Jake. He has been a good dog.
Next one will be Maggie. I dunno why, but I like it, and thats good enough for me.

Has a nice ring to it. Mine's name is "Sunnyview's Lord Nicolai of Avalon". Nicky.

Avalon is where the breed originated (on the isle of Labrador).

I feed him Pro Plan. Tried some of the others but he likes Pro Plan and it ain't grocery store junk!

Crabbait - My little Grady is a Sunnyview Lab also... picked him up down there from Dick last Wednesday. How old is your lab? Did you get him from Sunnyview in Salem?

Yep. He is one of Dick's dogs. He turned six August 13. I am looking for a good female to breed him to but everybody wants the dog to have "Master Hunter" in his title and I never pursued the title. He could do it with style if I took the time.

I hate to see the end of this line because both his dam, Kachina (MH) and sire, Buckweat (FC, AFC, MH) are gone now.

Everybody who sees the dog wants one of his pups. I may have to purchase a quality female and breed my own.

I would love to see your pup. We go to the Lucky Lab Brewpub (with dogs, of course) often. Maybe we can get together sometime.

Crabbait - Is your dog a yellow lab? When Grady gets a little older maybe my wife and I could meet you guys at the Lucky Lab for a pint or two. In the meantime I am going to borrow a digital camera and see if I can post a photo. Your dog sounds great. Doesn't Dick have a female that he would let your lab breed with? I don't know how it works.

My last two dogs have been named for nearby lakes (Dexter, Odell). Next one may be named "Waldo". Either that or maybe Fern Ridge? Siltcoos? Green Peter? :shocked: :whazzup:

A friend had a series of several black labs over 40 years, all named Tish. Kept things simple, I guess. :grin:

Suzie Bigfoot had puppies. One of them was a yellow lab. We called him George.

The crate training thing is the way to go. My 5 month old yellow was potty trained in no time flat. As far as the envitable "accident" there is this stuff call Natures Miracle that is great at cleaning up the stains etc. Takes out the smell as well. Works great on mud stains in the car too. I think we are gonna register our dog as "Spawn of Lucifer" We just call her Lucy
