Default Post-opener Deschutes River report

Well, I went and fished up and downstream of Maupin on Sunday, and that water has been open all year. I didn't have the cojones to battle other anglers on the upper river -- Warm Springs to the tribal boundary -- although I'm pretty sure the fishing was lights-out good.

I did a lot of exploring and walking -- the river was all but deserted, which was nice -- and hooked a few fish nymphing the seams along deep, rocky runs and fishing caddis cripples to rising fish in a couple backeddies.

It was a beautiful day. More in my blog....

The fishing was not lights out. Saturday was as poor of a day I have seen and the wind was category 4. Today was decent. Thanks for the report.

Bummer about Saturday -- especially that wind! A cold wind is tough to fight.
I expected pretty good fishing up there, as the trout haven't seen a fake fly for months.... I hope it was just the cold, late spring to blame.

We'll skip the carnival water and do the big float this weekend.

How'd the new ride feel?

Been raining cats and dogs in Madras the last day and a half. The river's going to be big and brown this weekend.

Haven't been motivated to get over there yet based on the droves on the upper stretch and the river on the rise with the rain. Saving myself for a few more weeks and then the annual Reservation assault with Jakob and Toots on June 6th.

The new ride is awesome. Going to take a while to get used to the low front end.

If it muddies up I'm going steelheading.
