Klamath Minnows
Alright another Klamath question. I went to buy minnows today (shiners and such) and they shell gas station was out, Big R was out, and the rod and gun rack had one bag (they are now out). Just curious if anyone can tell me where to get more or has methods for catching them? The fishing has finally been picking up and I really want to have more minnows!

The tackle shop closed but Parkers Rod and real is still there. I once heard Bi-mart had minnows but I can't confirm that.

Re: Klamath Minnows
Always used to dip our own , A small net made out of window screen about 2 x 4 , Almost any canel next to a iggr pump was good for several dozen . Also when they shut off the water in the fall to the canels we would dip and freeze for the winter fishing .This has been several years ago but they should be there yet .

Re: Klamath Minnows
Parker's had one more bag which is in my freezer, I think that dipping my own would be a worthwhile thing for sure. Would have saved a bunch of money this year!

I've never let the visibility slow me down. Wind has always been the stopper. You can get blown off of there in a hurry If you get a favorable wind forecast then go for it.

Sounds good!! Is there a good place online to check wind forcasts for that area? Thanks for the info.

Just remember that it is illegal to use live bait in freshwater and it's really illegal to transport live bait. ODFW is really hunting for the person that let Golden Shiners loose in Diamond Lake. They are going to make a serious example of them if they get their hands on them and man do they ever deserve it!.

Re: Klamath Minnows
You can however get a permit to transport live fish for free from ODFW. So you can get them home legally and into the freezer in good condition.
I'm guessing that the minnows would have to be legal to possess and taken in a legal manner, but the permit will cover the transporting part.

Re: Klamath Minnows
Let me get this straight. ODFW would issue a permit to tranport a non-native invasive species that often gets used illegally as live bait that has currently been illegally introduced into nearby Diamond Lake live?

huge assumption. i saw nothing that said that, it said if you are getting minnows you can transport them HOME for processing still alive. by doing this the first netted fish don't get soft before you bread and freeze.

There is also serious concern that the Kokanee tournament fishers that are used to using minnows in California, may be an issue in terms of minnows in Diamond Lake.
The Nor Cal Kokanee folks held a trout tourney at Diamond last year and have another scheduled for Sept., I believe it is, this year.

My understanding is that it was illegal to transport live bait fish in Oregon. Sounds like you can do it with a permit. Why, with so many problems with illegal introductions, would they make that permit available. A lot of the problems that we are facing in Central Oregon from illegal introductions of Tui Chubs start in the Klamath Basin where they are native. Golden Shiners are not native to the basin, but they are present there and in many lakes in the Medford/Grants Pass area.
I don't care if it's kokanee fishermen or anyone else. If you see someone fishing with live bait turn them in!
Hijack over.

Oh yummy...breaded shiners. So that's what they do with those critters. No more eating Kokanee for me!

Re: Klamath Minnows
May I interject a couple of points here? Nor Cal Kokanee fishermen did not hold a derby on Diamond Lake last year. That derby was hosted by Kokanee Power of Oregon which had 87 fishermen and was followed by another derby hosted by Blackbirds out of Medford that had closer to 1500 fishermen I hear.
Yes, Kokanee Power of Oregon is going to host another derby at Diamond Lake this year on Sept. 26 and 27. Our rules, #6 to be exact, state that "NO LIVE BAIT" is allowed with the exception of worms and nightcrawlers. We definitely do not support the use of live bait! Our organization will support ODFW in their quest to find the individual(s) responsible for introduction of live fish as bait into Diamond Lake.
Surely California kokanee fishermen that are used to using minnows MAY be an issue. So MAY Oregon fishermen who have access to live bait be an issue as well. Bottom line is this: I don't care where you live or where you come from, if I see you using live bait you WILL be reported.

Everyone is welcome to provide a tax deductible contribution to the REWARD FUND for Diamond Lake. It is at $8300 right now. You may send pledges and/or donations to Joe Merchep Umpqua River Foundation, Diamond Lake REWARD FUND, P.O Box 1127, Roseburg, OR 97470. (The TIN is 93-1214663 for the 501C3 organization). OSP, ODFW, Diamond Lake Resort, Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation and others are supportive of the Foundation's effort to help out. The higher the $$, the better according to OSP.

No worries. There's a lot of passion on here about that particular subject. I don't recall seeing the info about the reward on here before. Maybe you could make another post with that as the header to get more people informed and involved.

Well, I did find one more bag when out looking at various stores. I am planning on moving away from Klamath in the next week or two so I guess I will use them for one last fishing trip! Thanks for the info
