I have used K&N filters in my trucks for the last 8 years. There is no doubt that the filter allows better air flow which helps the engine breath better. As far as mileage increase I maybe saw a 1 mpg increase. I like the fact that it is the only filter I have to buy. Just clean it every 15 to 20k miles and your good to go.

What kind of vehicle do you have? If you have a PSD there is a better option.

I had a 93 300 six F150. The K&N and a better cat back exhaust helped a bit for power. But in the end it still wasnt enough so I got a 97 Powerstroke (PSD).

I like the K&N filters. Some have claimed they let dust in the engine but so far I have not found it to not be the case. Good luck.

I have a K&N on my 00' F350 PSD. Haven't noticed any dust either. Havent noticed any real fuel mileage increase either. Been running it for 2 years now. Do like the fact that you can really hear the turbo now since it gets so much better air flow  Best way I have found to get better milage in a PSD is to keep my foot out of the throtlle, but that doesnt ahppen very often either.

I also use K&N oil filters but I dont think they are that much better than anything else.

I have been running a K & N filter in my Toyota Tacoma for about 3 months. Fuel economy increased by about 1 mpg. I did have dust get by the filter housing. I don't think it got by the filter. The cage that comes with the filter is not the easiest unit to place in the housing. The first time I installed it I am fairly sure that it was not seated properly. Anyway, the result was my air mass sensor got dirty and it cost some $ to have that trouble diagnosed. Since then, being more careful, I have not had any trouble. I like the filter, but if I were to do it again for a Tacoma, I would get the TRD filter from Toyota which is made similar to a regular filter but with the cotton not paper.

I have a K&N filter on my '97 Expedition w/ 5.4 liter. I also installed a cat-back exhaust system w/ 3" pipe. With both of these I got a noticeable power increase, and my gas mileage is better by almost 2mpg, I'm currently getting about 15.5mpg around town, and 18-20 mpg on the highway. I would recommend the K&N filter. Both filter and cat-back cost about $300, well worth the $$$.

K & N filters give a good improvement in performance in almost every vehicle. The FIPK kits do even better with performance. Gasoline applications will commonly get an increase in milage, but even better when done in conjunction with exhaust system improvements. Diesels will generally not show much of a mileage improvement, but the improved airflow certainly allows the turbo to "spool" up quicker. Also in some applications it can drop the EGT by up to 100 degrees.
