DEQ vehicle test
What gives with DEQ over here? We didn't have emission tests on the east side of oregon. Took my 91 chev pickup into Gresham to be tested last week, It failed hydrocarbon and nox test. A friend recommended a CRC product called "Pass State Emission", run it with a tank of gas and re-test, Went back to Gresham, it failed nox test, went directly to clackamas, it failed hydrocarbon test, went directly to 33rd and columbia blvd. it passed all tests. All of this done after running at hiway speeds for about 20 miles to warm up the catalytic converter, which a friend reccomended i do. Anyway, done venting

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">That's too bad, hopefully someday everyone will have to take them. I hate the fact that a ton of people drive from Yamhill Co. (where I live) into the metro area every day to work, running their vehicles just as much as someone who lives in the area, yet the test isn't required!! I follow some real obnoxious rigs, belching smoke and stink, that are definitely late 80's, early 90's rigs.

The test is also required in the Rogue valley.

Re: DEQ vehicle test
The DEQ test are just another way for Portland and vicinity to get into our pockets. If they were really concerned about air quality they would control the trucks ,buses, and the rest of the diesel running rigs out there.I see great clouds of black smoke from the buses but they sure don't run them through. This latest testing method for the newer vehicles is a joke also.they put you on a set of rollers and depends where you go if you pass or not or if they are busy or bored. This test system was s******* by Texas and guess who came along and bought it,Oregon naturally and they figured they had a new fangled test so they could double the testing fees.Like I say just another way for the local goverment to get into your and my pockets, with no way around it but move.

Re: DEQ vehicle test
Had an old chev impala when I was a kid and had to take it into DEQ. It failed and I wasnt surprised. I went home and handed my keys to my girlfriend who had been in the backyard sunbathing. I told her to take the car back to the DEQ station and give it a try for me. Needless to say, 1/2 hr later she came home and handed me a certificate that said the car passed DEQ emissions test. Was it the bikini or luck, the world may never know.....

Re: DEQ vehicle test
The emissions of a diesel motor are not as "bad" as those of gasoline powered engines.(they just look bad) That is why they are not subject to DEQ..At least thats what I was told

Re: DEQ vehicle test
When I was in the automotive trade I sold a lot of that CRC "Guaranteed To Pass". I only had one guy bring it back (out of about 200) and say it didn't work. If you need to bootleg a car through DEQ, that's the ticket. If you have visible smoke, try using synthetic oil. It burns a lot clearer.
JCJ-
The EPA is cracking down on all highway diesels now. All new engines made after Oct. 2002 have to meet new standards or the manufacturer pays huge fines. IHC, Detroit Diesel, Cummins, Mack and Volvo all have EGR & variable turbo systems now which add about 200 lbs and around $5000 to the cost of a new truck. Caterpillar missed the deadline and is paying instead. It's driven the price of used trucks way up since everyone's scared of the new engines.
And Foxer's right. The emissions aren't as harmful (less CO), just more sulfur and other sooty crap that looks bad.
