Couple cool pics from today.
I had originally set out to fish for a few hours at a local park, and as I was walking across a bridge I noticed about 15 fish surrounding this downed tree. After shock set in I ran down (fell and almost snapped my rod) to fish for 'em. Turned out they were carp, but I still had an alright time observing them. (powerbait didn't produce)

Re: Couple cool pics from today.
Sorry about the huge picture sizes. They're actually easier to see this way though.

Yeah, I've been suckered into wasting a cast or two on carp, thinking they were something else.

Come back to that creek in about 3 weeks, fish on!
The big largemouth move up from the willy and spawn in there

Re: Couple cool pics from today.
I was at Silver Lake this morning and there were hundreds of carp in the shallows. They were in as little as 6" of water, slashing around and bobbing their noses out of the water. Guess they were spawning. Bowfishermen would have had a blast.

Re: Couple cool pics from today.
Try garden worms or little bread balls. Carp are strong fish. Some people flyfish for them too.

Flyfishing for carp in Columbia River backwaters is FUN. The fish are huge, and they rip off a lot of line and fight hard. Flyfishing for carp is growing in popularity -- they're a challenging, although ugly, fish.

Hey I know that spot. I even caught a steelhead 100 yds upstream back in the 70's. I need to check out some of my favorite Carp spots. They are fun to catch.

Re: Couple cool pics from today.
George Rodgers Park in Lake Oswego ??
I spent many a summer as a kid exploring and fishing that backwater area. In the summer you can catch crappie and bluegill - go up the the power generator Building upstream, there are two tunnels, when its hot out the fish hang out in the tunnels.
Beware - They are lil guys.. But when you are a rug-rat kid, they all count.
Could be my favorite park. Needless to say, the wife & I have bought our home within walking distance.

Re: Couple cool pics from today.
I spent most of my summers as a grade schooler on that creek, I dont go much anymore except for in the spring to target the bigger fish. In my time on the creek I saw at least 4 different species of salmonids (I saw 2 sockeye in full spawning colors right there above the big pool ), shad, catfish, and even a little sturgeon once. I should start going back...

Definitely! It's a great little place. You've gotta love the fun for the whole family aspect too.. In the spring on these nice days there are always people laying out in the sun, and taking hikes etc.. While I'm the lone fisherman typically. :/

Re: Couple cool pics from today.
One question...Places where there are a lot of carp, is it worth it to remove these carp or is it beneficial to have them?

As with all questions like this, this is no one size fits all answer. It depends on the body of water. Carp can be an important part of the health of a lake but like any fish the population can explode and get completely out of balance.
My grandpa had a cabin on a small lake in northern Wisconsin that had a big problem with carp. The DNR in Wisconsin sometimes get people to "manage" small lakes. Well they gave my gandpa the equipment to shock the lake, taught him how to use it and keeps the numbers, and how to send them the reports. He did the job for about 30 years and during that time there were a few years that the carp got really out of control and the other fish had no safe place to spawn. The DNR would often change the rules for the lake based on his reports and at one point made it open season on carp. This included opening to bow hunting for carp year round and a $0.50 per carp reward. After just two years the number of carp was back to a resonable number but it took another two years after that for the perch, bluegills, and crappie to recover. The bass and the walleye took even longer to recover.
