Default Is your Avatar too big?

I have noticed on a few occasions that some folks are relying on the bulletin board software to squeeze their Avatar image down to meet the 48x48 dimensions. Sounds easy enough, but the problem is that the file size is not changing, just the dimensions. So if you are uploading a picture that is 50k in size, that means that the image is STILL 50k in size when each person who sees your posts loads your avatar, even though the dimensions are now 48x48. It just squishes all those pixels into that small picture.

This does have a negative effect on both the people who are on dialup modem Internet connetions who have to download these large files, and on the owner of this website (Jennie) because she has to pay for that file to be sent down to each person who views a post with that Avatar in it.

I bring this up because two of the top 10 images served by the iFish server last month, ranked by total amount of data sent, were icons that match the above scenerio. When properly resized these images drop from as much as 80k to right about 1k in size. BIG difference.

So, I'm feeling generous. If you have a file that you are currently using, or one that you want to use, as your Avatar, drop me an email at david@thefishinggeek.com with the file attached and I will send it back to you correctly sized and ready for upload at iFish. I'm not going to help you put it into your profile, as there are instructions on how to do that already available.

This effort is in no way affiliated with iFish. I just was checking out their online logs in my quest for knowledge and noticed the above. Consider it payback to the site for knowledge gained.

Hurry! Supplies are limited, offer void where prohibited, no coupons will be accepted, and offer may be cancelled if I feel that it is not appreciated. I don't want payment. Just "pay it forward" as the movie said.

Wow! Thanks!
This is a great offer, you guys!
I spend much of my time doing this for fellow ifishers.
Also, another problem, is that if your avatar is a rectangle, saving it to a square image size screws up the aspect ratio.
What to do? Copy the pic, resize it and place it on a 48 by 48 white background.
I'm sure that the geek here knows how to do this!
Thanks so much!
Jen

There is a Sam Kinison (RIP, good man) monologue that resolves that issue, but I hesitate to present such material at a family site. I will only tell you that it is on his album "Have You Seen Me Lately?"

Anyone? No one? There are files out there that need to be resized...does nobody care that this costs Jen extra money to transfer these larger files?

Yeah, iFish is free to use but we sure as heck shouldn't make the owners of the website pay MORE for our laziness.

Back to the top, as there are still those who are using big photos for their avatars. In fact, one of the photos has already accounted for 450 megabytes of traffic for iFish in the month of November alone.
