Are mornings worth it this time of year?
Obviously as the day wears on, the water gets warmer and bass probably get more active.....but does that mean that the mornings are worthless? Do you hardcore guys sleep in a little bit this time of year in order to focus in the afternoon?, or is it business as usuall?

Re: Are mornings worth it this time of year?
If your fishing for the true hogs, 8lb fish or better, try fishing for them at night! They do not have to be caught off a bed, look for them to move in shallow, and stay shallow throughout the night! If we get a week of solid 65 -70 degree weather look for the fish to start spawning! They can get bumped off there bedding area, with a day or two of cooler weather, but will immediatly return after warm weather continues. My PB came out of ten foot of water off a shallow point! Fish was in pre spawn , just itching to move up shallow! Mornings can be realy good on reaction baits, topwater as well! Realy hate to say that my biggest fish came on a do nothing bait but it did! Eveyone got skunked today. ouch!!!! water was "mississippi brown, and temps were 59-60 degrees. oh wel!!!!! awesome day !

Fished Tenmile this morning and scouted unfamiliar waters. On the water at 6AM. Caught three fish all before 9 AM. Then nothing except a couple hits untill I left at around 3 PM! Water temp 55-57*! No reaction bite!

Re: Are mornings worth it this time of year?
After the water hits 50 deg. That is when I start fishing early. This is a cool spring and the bass are a bit slow to move up shallow. But the best ealy morning bite really gets good in June. But you will find me fishing early even now and I will stay for the afternoon bite too. Some lake just are early morning bites Hagg and Silver come to mind off the top of my head. Like others have said before afternoon is more dependable in the spring. But I for one really enjoy fishing early. I love to start when its still dark out. And I have landed lots of fish in the moning and in the spring too

Re: Are mornings worth it this time of year?
Thanks roger! I have heard that frosty mornings make for slow fishing, Is there any truth to that?.........It was very frosty saturday morning, and 7 bass fisherman got skunked that day, around 30-35 poles swinging, not one fish. the water was Dirrrrrty!

Is morning fishing worth it this time of year?
Depends on what you expect out of the morning. Coffee on the water w/ rod in hand seems to taste better than coffee on the sofa watching other people do it on ESPN/OTDR CH. The dog agrees w/ me too.....although he perfers rvr water over coffee.
But that said, 10-2pm has been treating me well enough. Personally I think it's more about the sun right now than anything. Cloud cover seems to shut the bite down.
My advice, fish when you can fish....the more often the better.

Re: Are mornings worth it this time of year?
Yes if it gets cold at night fishing will be alot of work. But when the water gets above 50 it normaly stays there. Some days in the spring I only get bass early.

Re: Are mornings worth it this time of year?
My wife has agreed to go with me tomorrow morning and I get to pick the place. PM or post your thoughts: Willy (and where) or Hagg? BTW, does anyone know the water temps at Hagg yet? I see online the Willy is pushing 53-55 at the Morrison bridge. We are both bass fishers, have studied the posts for suggested techniques, but still learning Willy geography (topography?) . Any $0.02 would be appreciated...
Thanks,
Piscatus

My wife & I are going also Sat. We'll be on the Willamette. We won't start Bass fishing early. We'll make a couple passes for Salmon, then go look for some Bass. We will be looking for back waters near current. The still water will be a little warmer IMHO. I'm a LOUSY Bass fisherman, so take any advise from me with a HUGE grain of salt. There are MANY more people in the know on this sight, than me. I'll search with crankbaits in smolt or firetiger, lipless for shallow, lipped for deep. Then tubes, jigs & grubs if I find some fish.............
 Worth ever penny!
GOOD LUCK!

Re: Are mornings worth it this time of year?
I fished Fern Ridge Saturday morning. I had a limit by 9 a.m. Culled a little later in the morning and then nothing 'till 3 p.m. weigh-in.
I know other boats that caught 'em all day long. But I went biteless all afternoon.
So is it worth it to fish the morning this time of year? I used to say no but Saturday might make me change my position.
