Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
Rain!
What does that mean?
Chanterelles and more salmon!
Anyone know how much rain it takes and how long after to produce the first signs of these golden beauties?
I can't wait!

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
Jen, The pickers on the coast around Siltcoos lake have been getting them all ready, along with lobsters and some others supposedly.
The wife and I WERE going to go toward the coast and look for some chant's and some bolete's today but it's raining at the rate of an 1.5"/hr now, so I don't know if we will?

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
I got into some shrooms on the way home from Nestucca tidewater on Saturday. Thought since I didn't land a fish I would scout out the mushrooms. I go home the back way over Bible Creek into Sheridan. Parked the truck and baaabooom. 10 feet from the rig and bingo. There they were.. Early yeah but, dry and plentyful. Get up there cause there here.
I catered a party on Sunday and had left over CAB NY steaks so guess what we had for dinner last night. I like to oven roast mine. I peel the stem,WASH them, slice them and a red onion, get a sheet pan hot with olive oil on the oven and lay out onto pan. Sprinkl with S/P. The liquid comes out and reduces, coating the mushrooms with concentrated roast "forestier" flavors. Deglase' the pan with Brandy and add brown sauce. Reduce to consistancy. Ladle over meat... Enjoy while the gettin's good!!!

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
Well....
I turned my cd player up to unbearable levels and headed up 6, after I got my hair done. Chanterelles are best found after getting your hair done, I've heard.
It didn't work!
I didn't see ONE!
Not even a mushroom of ANY kind!
I think I'll hunt around here for a while.
I almost got stuck too... Way up a logging road with no one with me. Now that woulda been cute. (But at least I would have been found 3 days later, starving, cold and wet... with a nice doo! )

I love shrooms, but I am not familiar with the Lobster Musroom. What does it look like?

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
Excuse me, but I'm looking for a mushroom guide.....
Actually, Pete got me into them pretty good last year. This, after being convinced finally, after 10 trips that it was another form of snipe hunting.
How much do you charge for a shroom trip, Pete?

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
The key is to look for the Oregon Grape(a plant or shrub). If you can find an area full of Oregon grape then you will find chanterelles. They are out now, so get your boots and bring a bucket!

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
I found Oregon Grape. No shrooms by it at all.
Unless my eyesight is really still failing. :depressed:
Anyway, I understand they are secret. I'm going to find one though, dangit! It's like a new haunt for me. More important than salmon. I can find those... This is a real challenge!
Questions:
If you have a place around your house that LOOKS chanterell--ie, what would happen if you let some spores loose? Sounds weird, but how could you "plant" some? How could you encourage your own patch? Is it possible? Has it been done? How do they multiply?

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
I found it!
If any of you care about my vision, you will help me by showing me all of your favorite chanterelle haunts.
As referenced here:

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
Wow! Someone try this! I can't wait!
Think I should move this to Life in General?
I think so.....
CHANTERELLE VELVET SOUP
Makes 8 servings
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup white rice flour
8 cups chicken broth
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound chopped chanterelle mushrooms
1 small diced onion
2 chopped shallots
1 rib celery, chopped
1 carrot, peeled and diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup Marsala wine or dry sherry
2 cups whipping cream
1 tablespoon sherry vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and freshly ground pepper
- Sour cream for garnish
- Minced fresh chives for garnish
Make a roux by melting the butter in a small saucepan over medium
heat. Stir in the rice flour and cook, stirring continuously, until the roux
is golden brown and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Set aside to cool. In a
large stock pot over high heat, bring the chicken broth to a boil. Whisk in
the roux and cook until reduced by one-third. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil
in a large saute pan over high heat. Add the mushrooms, onion, shallots,
celery, carrot and garlic. Cook over high heat until carrots are tender, 5 to
8 minutes. Add the Marsala and boil over high heat until half of the liquid
remains. In a food processor or blender, puree the cooked vegetables.
Whisk the puree into the stock. Add the cream, vinegar and Worcestershire
sauce and season to taste with salt and black pepper. To serve, ladle into
large bowls and garnish each bowl with a dollop of sour cream and some minced
chives.

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
We used to pick these when I was a kid and sell them at the Burnett store up here.
We used to take lots of them. I mean LOTS!!!!
I don't remember a whole lot as I was just a kid, but I remember going to the same spots every year and getting bucket after bucket of them. The store gave us these big plastic crates to put them in after we'd cleaned them.
We'd keep hitting the same spots every year until Weyerhauser would log the area.
Cone picking and mushroom picking was what we did in the fall. No one ever messed with that "stupid" fishing!!!! :depressed:

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
I used to have the same frustration finding Chanterelles. As much as I hunt in the dog hair and timber, I thought I should have no problem finding tons of them. It wasn't until one rainy day as I ate my lunch at the base of a big Fir that I discovered my problem:
I was looking for an Orange mushroom with a distinct inverted funnel shape. I looked at the pale capped mushrooms around where I was sitting, and saw the gills extending down the sides. They did not have convex caps, but I picked a couple and smelled them: Apricots! I noticed that from the side (Chipmunk's eye view) they were yellow. So I figured out what they look like, and I have had plenty of chanterelles ever since.
Oregon grape and Salal are good indicators of Chanterelle locations, but so are Red Huckleberries, in my experience.

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
My second favorite outdoor endeavor is looking for chantrelles. I've only been at it for a few years. I was fortunate enough to have a friend willing to "give-up" a spot in the coast range. Since then I have found spots on the west slope of the Cascades.
I went out last Sat. with my daughter, in the Cascades, and found none.
I have picked lobsters, but haven't found a palateable way to cook them. Any hints would be appreceiated.

Re: Nothing better than chanterelles and salmon..
I got into chanterelles as a back up to a bad day of fishing, the result is some fall days I crave the "hunt" for chanterelles and other edibles more than the fish. That is still hard to confess, especially since I haven't been fishin' this fall and I am eager to go. But there is a definite satisfaction gathering something so prized and to do it in the beauty of the woods. There is the satisfaction of knowledge-the knowledge that you can harvest from the wild. The satisfaction is resurrected when the picker sees what the stores are asking for them. When comparing the enjoyment aspects the similarities between fishing and shrooming are pretty much the same.(Except haven't had a chanterell take my bobber down or even give me a good fight.
Jennie I can't help but feel you have chanterelles growing within a few miles of your place on the Kilches. A few places to scout out would be the county park( not in the grass, but the more remote parts and off the logging road . Those that suggested looking in areas of salal and Oregon grape are right on, but the the mycorizzal network is not dependent on those host plants. Explore the mossy areas too, enjoy your walk and soon you will find them.
The lack of rain has certainly had a tremendous effect on the chanterelles and the more rain the better. The Oregon Mycological Society has had to cancel field trips because of the few species and low quantity of mushrooms available. Two weeks from now we should see more. But we had a dry summer and to get a good fall yield the summer should be moister than normal with a moister than normal fall. The beauty is these fellas will be around for a couple of months.
Jen I will email you about getting together to shroom, that work thing is got me busier than I would care to be(considering the time of year) .But I thank God I have a job. Perhaps we can have an ifish "Fish and Shroom day. Sometime when the fish move into the rivers and the chanterellles are fat and sassy .
