Please cut the cussing around kids and ladies

How many times have you brought your kids or wife fall chinook or other fishing, to teach them the ropes, when the language gets so bad, you have to pack up and leave?

Now, river etiquette dictates that you don't put junior casting in the thick of things. But every time I try to bring my wife or kids, even if they are just watching dad, it seems the language is so foul, it stinks. I've asked these "old salts" to please tone it down with the kids and ladies present, but every time, it just gets worse. How are you supposed to teach them without sounding like you in the Marines?

Am I the only one that cares about this issue?

Can't we all keep it clean while the kids and ladies are present?

It's the same reason this site is kept clean, because there are even elementary school kids reading this site, per Jennie.

Let's carry this over to the fishing holes. If there are no kids around, whatever, to each his own. I wish it were kept clean then too, but if kids or ladies are around, show respect and restraint.

While I totally agree that cussing around children is most offensive... As an adult female I can let somebody know if they are offending me. I can say out loud what bothers me. I appreciate your sentiment, but the wives can fend for themselves. As a matter of fact, we will join you in reminding the "potty-mouths" that they are rude and not appreciated.

I'm all for it, despite sounding like an old sailor when the kids are out of earshot. If you wouldn't say it in a grocery store, maybe you shouldn't be yelling it across seven boats, three of them with kids, in a hogline.

Or do so, and show what kind of person you are. I can handle it either way.

Personally, I speak the same way EXCEPT when I'm doing my job. Which, I shoot the you know what with certain customers.

I feel it's no one's place to say anything to anyone on their language. If you don't like it, move on. Kid's that are sheltered turn out to be a bit gullible to the real world. If you keep someone in the dark about something, chances are that they'll be more likely to actually try doing it if given chance. Open door policy is best. The worst mouths I ever heard were friends who had parents that told them to be "nice" and "polite" speaking. If one is offended by "cursing", then they should stay at home. This fishing is for EVERYONE. It seems that a small percent (or newer percent) seem to try and dictate the rules for everyone.

SKP...basically you are right! There is a lack of respect for the rules....just common sense. This "do as I please" mentality is quite prevalent.
I wonder how many parents would like teachers to speak to their children using "cursing" language.
In the long run, what goes round comes round and I suspect that perhaps Stlh69 doesn't have any children.

Wrong-o 69..... my kids will learn that is is ok to have the guts to stand up to right and wrong.

If the foul mouthed louts don't like me telling them to clean it up they can go elsewhere, it works both ways.

I even told some low life punks at the Duck game to clean it up on Sat. and had several women with kids thank me.

If we give up everytime someone does something wrong and just move on, eventually there will be no place to hide.

Have the guts to stand up for right and wrong and teach your kids the same is how I see it.

when "FOUL MOUTH FOOLS" start spouting off.

I was in the Navy (dumb / young) and followed the crowd. I too had a foul mouth. It seems to be expected and almost taught in the service and several other trades.

Like stopping any addiction, to quit, it begins with your own will. You have to have "the want to", in order to stop. Or else, its just the "self denial syndrome".

People (men, women, and kids) who use foul language indicate to me the scum of a life they live. :depressed:

I must admit that when not in the company of women and children my mouth runs amock. It is on self control. When with buddies I speak how i wish. Must have been that bar of soap in 1959. I go to beaver games. I sit in the first row right behind the visitors bench. I too wish the fans could keep the language clean. Say anything you want, just leave the dirt for another time. I was told as a child the only place to spit is in the bathroom or in the grass, i feel the same way about cussing. I won't tell anyone there offenisve. I will either egnore it or move on. Kinda like the hog line.

There is no excuse for foul language to be shared with the boats around you, whether there are women and children or not. I too have asked boats to tone it down. Don't take me wrong, I occasionally use some of these words, but I am very selective about the company in which it is used. Some of these people would be mute if you took these words from their vocabulary. I have heard some of these people who can't complete a sentence without the "F" word being included in it.
I think it is sad that these words have become so common in everyday conversation. I was listening to KEX yesterday afternoon and they were discussing the Portland Police Department and how the officers should not be held accountable for using profanity. I don't care if they are dealing with a low life scumbag or not. There is no excuse for this and they should act in a professional manner. This permissive attitude is one of the problems our society is facing.

First off, the hogline I was in on Sunday was great! I only heard one four letter word and it was very appropriate at the time.

A few cuss words here and there are not that big of a deal. My favorite word is S**t. But if someone is sitting there saying f this and f that, it gets old in a hurry. A caption once told a group of my X husbands friends that they were welcome back, but not to bring him because of his foul mouth.

Just keep things in moderation and watch what you say around the kids. If the parent of the kid doesn't like it, it is up to them to speak up.

I was once told that a person cussing was a "Conversaitional cripple looking for a crutch to stand on". I was told this by a bass fishermen at the end of a day of fishing. I later found out that he was a pastor...it was in 1989 and I can honestly tell you I think about that every time I start to swear...DJ

OK, I have held back on this one but...

I have been known to swear as much as all the other drunken louts I'm hanging out with, especially at places like the beach cabin we rent while at our annual fishing derby. But we try to make sure the audience is appropriate for the language, and we are always doing it back and forth in playful diatribe.

And yeah, occasionally a s or f come out in the heat of the moment, but I really try to not do that in places someone might be offended or kids are around.

But what I remember most about this came as a college student. An English professor pointed out that monosyllabic swear words really do show a lack of class. English is an extremely rich language he pointed out, and if one wants to truly communicate and emphasize the point, use language to do it.

That is why I often write of "lumps of fetid steamy dog excrement" as opposed to "s__t. " Or, "He has Cranial rect_l inversion problems" as opposed to "He is an a__hole".

When you can do this vocally it is soo much richer and enjoyable. Takes thought and practice, but is really a fun challenge. At least for those that can think.

You are right, Chris, it was a little over the edge. However, it does indicate what a lot of people are thinking when they hear the kind of talk that is prevalent with some people. They may never say that the cusser has dropped a notch or two, but they have.

I can think of no one who has earned my respect because of their eloquent use of expletives (it takes no brains to be a potty mouth).

there is a time and place for cuss words and around kids and women i think we as men should keep it clean. if it is just the boys out elk hunting swear all you want. i just think it is inappropriate around kids. we all need to do our part to keep this world civil.

Foul language is a sign of ignorance and lack of vocabulary to express oneself. There are so many other wonderful words in life to use. Expand your horizons and intellect and try some of them.

No one is perfect. Slips do occur out of anger or frustration. and yes habit. For those you can be tollerated. For use in each sentence you are being down right rude.

I agree with SH 69 in one respect. Always keeping your kids sheltered is not the greatest thing for them. My wife and I protect our kids as much as possible from today's standard of trash (secular TV, secular music, etc), but, being we use the public school system, we realize there is going to be some degree of exposure to it all. We just do our best to teach them what is right and what is wrong.

I have taught my kids to look at someone who talks like that as very small minded and ignorant because they usually are.

Most people that talk like that in public don't really understand how ignorant it makes them look.

I remind them, however, that -- more often than not -- those trashmouths just can't seem to think of something more intelligent to say, and that everyone within earshot is forming an opinion of them.

Besides, when I ask one of my kids to not "act like a turkey's caboose," they seem to get the message.

I went right to the bottom of the thread when read what Steelheader 69 said in reply to this thread. I for one think you are back *** word thinking. Ya I should leave or move on if you or others want to use filthy language, I don't think so. You have been brain washed by the ways of this filthy world. I think women and children need to be shown respect at all time, unless they show to have no respect for others. As for keeping my kids ( as you said sheltered from the world) you are darn right that I want to keep them away from people like you. You speak words that others know are filth and make excuses for your lack of a proper vocabulary. I for one think this is a sign of weekness/not manliness , so grow up and shut your mouth out of respect for others who don't want to hear you useless filth.

If it wasn't in there to begin with, it wouldn't be coming out. Foul language provides evidence of what's inside.

As far as "not sheltering" our children, who would be better able to handle hearing foul language for the first time: A seven year old or an 18 year old?

I've never had the experience of people cussing around my kids, but then I avoid taking them to places where I've heard a lot of it.

Thanks for moving this. I didn't realize it would cause such a stir. We as men set the example for our future generation fishermen and women. Let's not set the wrong example. Maturity and properness is what we need.

Hopefully, now we can all fish without the added junk. I hope to bring my girls fishing soon, so please don't litter the water or litter our ears and minds. Most people do not like garbage in any form.

I was fishing on Friday in a hog line. There were no kids around, no women around. One boat in particular had such a foul conversation, it would have hairlipped just about anyone. However, I said NOTHING to them. It would not have been my place to say anything. Had my daughter been there, I would have kindly asked them to tone it down. Most would, but sadly some have made it worse, where I've had to pack it up. (How many have met a guy they call "Dean"? (I don't know his real name)) These type are dangerous (in most cases). You can judge the book by the cover.

It's like someone constantly blowing smoke in your face. That's irritating. Anyone would ask them to quit it. How about blowing profanities and dirty stories into my kid's ears. It makes me angry. And I know it makes all fathers angry.

Take some class, and keep foul language in the appropriate places, but not where familes have gathered. :smile:
