Default My first stab at Google Earth KML - Wikiup

I used the Garmin Inland Lakes CD to create a GPS route of the river channels of Wikiup. I then used a utility that converted the Mapsource file with the route to a Mapsource file that contained tracks. I then used a free online service from www.gpsies.com to convert it into a Google Earth KML file. When you open the file, it shows where Garmin thinks the river channels are.

I don't think it's particularly accurate, parts of the channel are shown on dry land, and there are places on the Deschutes channel that are obviously incorrect, but it was interesting to me to try this and see what it looked like.

I'm a Wikiup novice and don't know that lake at all. Other than what I've commented on, how accurate is this??

Right click and select Save as or Save Target as to download the file to your computer.

The big wide spot in the channel is where it splits and I didn't record that in the original route.

All I see is a bunch of text.

Are you able to convert a copy to .jpg or other image file that might be more viewer friendly?

Great idea, but unfortunately, I can only see raw data from your link. I have most of the channel from Gull Point to the confluence with the Davis arm marked with waypoints. I can get those numbers off my FF for comparison with your calculations.

Right click on the link, save as or save target as.

The raw data you're seeing is a KML file, if you save it to your PC and launch Google Earth you'll see something like this:

NWsoftball, you might want to check out GPSVisualizer.com for data conversions. You can go straight from Garmin's file format to KML.

I think that looks pretty close save for the few areas that obviously pass of shallow spots.

Can't wait until Wickiup and Reservoir C.G. open up! It's not too far down the road.

Now that you've got the kml file mastered, the next step is to locate the fishin' hot spots. You could create fish-shaped placemarks with different colors -- green for hot fishing, yellow for so-so fishing, red for spots to avoid, etc. You could also use the correct shape of fish -- one shape for browns, another for kokes, still another for bass, etc. A weekly update would keep us all in the fish! Canes_Venatici taught me how to use the above concept with aphid flights in potato fields. See my website for an example from last fall -- click on "current aphid report...google earth format" at potatovariety.oregonstate.edu . You can tell very quickly the fields with aphid problems. Keep us posted on your progress!

From within Garmin's MapSource (version 6.13.4 or later) displaying Waypoints, Routes and/or Tracks, select MapSource View, and then at the bottom of the contex menu, click on View in Google Earth... This will then open the pre-installed Google Earth (version 4.2 or later) and will immediately zoom to display your MapSource Waypoints, Routes and Tracks from Goggle Earth Temporary Place MapSource Folders for Waypoints, Routes and Tracks layered over the airphotos. This may require us to update Mapsource software from the Garmin Website and/or update Google Earth to the latest version(s). This will not require an intermediate step to make a KML file before starting Google Earth. When saved with Google Earth, the KML file is also created.
