help finding the right reel.......
Well I got into fly fishing for some salmon this past year and all I have is some really non-quality equipment it works but want better.
Soooo.. the million dollar question.. What kind of reel do you recommend? Need something with a GOOD drag on it. And would like to get it without have to give up the first born child as well.. be nice if I could stay aorund a 100.. but if need be I can go higher for the right thing..
First is the reel, next will be a very nice rod..
thanks!!

Difficult to beat a Ross real, probably #1 in the industry, will set you back more than $100, however!

Re: help finding the right reel.......
I hear good things about the Echo but know nothing about it personally, it might be your first choice pricewise. The Tioga is up there with the Ross Cimarron but a little lighter and slightly less expensive. Is there a Cimarron #5? I'm thinking the #4 would be too small or marginal for salmon, regarding line capacity.

Re: help finding the right reel.......
you can probably find a SA system II 10-11 used off ebay for 100.00, with a drag to stop a freight train. Overall, any decent 10wt. fly reel with any kind of decent drag will run over 100 new. Ross is good for the money, reddington maybe.

Re: help finding the right reel.......
The Tioga reels are a good choice. I own a standard arbor #12 and a large arbor #10. The #12 is great for chinook. I don't think you can get a better reel for $150 that comes with a lifetime warranty. I REALLY abuse mine each fall and it continues to function perfectly. As for the System two reels I own two 89 models and one 1011, all of which I purchased several years back. It shocks me that a company would produce a reel which, when wet, loses drag. Don't waste your money on a system two. I still use mine for steelhead sometimes, but I know I'm not going to be taken 1/4 mile downstream like a big nook occasionally will. Ross reels are great too. I own a canyon LA, but you'll pay a bit more for 'em. A lot of guys will fish 8-10 wt rods for chinook, which is fine in open waters. If you fish around lots of rocks and/or logs, go with at least a 10wt, 12 is better. It feels like a lot of rod at first, but with a 30+ lb chrome chinook on, you'll be glad you have it. Happy hooking!

Check out the new Pflueger Trion reels. $99 at FMS or online for the 9/10 weight.
Large arbor, disk drag. Nicely done.
