If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
Where would it be? I would like to try the Kamchatka Peninisula In Russia! Wild steelhead averaging about 15 lbs. in an unspoiled fishery
Then I would like to fly fish some of the legendary rivers in Montana.
How about you?

Did NZ once and would like to do it again. I'll also second the Argentina trip.

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
Yup, Argentina popped into mind, and a quick google search only reinforced the notion. Do you think these things take dries?
A good friend of mine spent some time in the middle east as a child, and told me that he and his dad once had an amazing several days of trout fishing in the mountains of Pakistan. I wonder what other great zipperlip flyfishing destinations there are that you don't hear about in the fly magazines?

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
TC, I like your attitude! That may well be the best-humored post I've read.
"But, as my slogan below suggests, I have not caught fish in lots of places. Next week I will see if there are fish near Barcelona to not catch."
I'd like to do rainbows and chums, pinks, or cohos in a small river in Alaska. I'd probably enjoy grayling or char just as much. I'm a bit apprehensive of all the hype though, as with the other places mentioned. You see photos of a secluded lodge, but its booked every day for 5 months of the year so how can it be a virgin fishing experience? It looks like I may need to pony up for a private float plane ride on that dream trip. Or, a long float, where you get dropped off 100 miles upstream of the nearest town.

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
Salt - Belize
Steelies - Kamchatka or BC
Trout - Patagonia, although I guided in Alaska and am convinced there is a world record rainbow in the Kvichak. I will catch it.

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
Kamchatka and Alaska for steelhead and salmon.
Belize or some other nice tropical flats.
Cabo (see the recent newsletter from the Flyfishing Shop in Welches.)
I have had some opportunities in some of the legendary places (Alaska, New Zealand, Montana). I had a fabulous day with Chum on the fly in Alaska about five years ago. But I'm usually trying to self guide in strange places, which is not always productive.
But, as my slogan below suggests, I have not caught fish in lots of places. Next week I will see if there are fish near Barcelona to not catch.

I would like to fish any place tropical that has tarpon and bonefish.
For freshwater, summer steelhead on the Skeena system in B.C.

I would love to explore the Amazon River with a large assortment of streamers and surface "popping" flies. Just the idea of not knowing what kind of freakish fish is going to hit your fly next interests me.

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
Montana/Wyoming is a blast; Madison, Yellowstone, Rock Creek, DePuys Spring Creek, Gallatin, Beaver Head - spent a month in the back of my pick-up vagabonding. Never really felt like I was fishing water that hadn't seen a fly recently, but there are some spectacular places to fish and some great fishing at times.
Northern Idaho, Kelly Creek, gets my vote for most remote and fishiest place. The cutts have been catch and release for 50 years and with a little hike, you can be where only pack trains and bears go.
New Zealand is a challenge, but my week there returned some of my most memorable fishing. The Tongariro River, where Zane Gray set up camp, has rainbows that live in the lake, but run up the river to spawn (or be spawned in the case of the hatchery fish). My best day was also my most disappointing. I landed 8 'bows. The smallest was about 3 1/2 pounds. The largest was 9 pounds 7 ounces. The down side was that I fished next to my dad all day and he never touched a fish. :depressed:
The other tough part of fishing New Zealand which I didn't get to experience is the expense. It costs a ton to get there. And to really enjoy the marquis fishing, you need a guide and a helicopter. Cha-ching! Add to that lodging and meals and it's quickly a major expense.
If I could fly fish anywhere ... I'll get to that. I frequently have to remind myself that Oregon has some of the best fly fishing anywhere. Trout and steelhead in the Deschutes. Trout in the Wood and Williamson. Steelies in the North Umpqua. Trout in the Metolius. Brownies in the John Day or Rogue. We really do have some amazing water and fish within a day's drive of most of us.
But if I could fish anywhere ... there are still some trips on my list. Trout in the Kamloops area. BC Steelies in the Babine / Bulkley. Native trout in the hills of the Carolinas. Trout Creek in Pennsylvania. And of course, big rainbows in Alaska. Oh, and tarpon in Costa Rica. ... and permit ... and snook ... I guess I can't be satisfied. I think I'll stick close to home for a bit until gas prices drop again.

Nepal.
I really don't know if there are any fish there, but I've always wanted to go to Nepal, and a fishing trip is as good an excuse as any.

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
Like Pete, I've had a chance to visit some of the famed waters. Mostly on family trips to Yellowstone and visiting relatives in the midwest and would stop along the way. Then being an exchange student gave me the opportunity to fish atlantics in the UK and fish throughout Europe. Plus fished up in BC, and throughout the US thanks to my ex (she worked for the airlines so flying was cheap).
But, if I had my chance, I'd go to both sides of Russia. Kola Peninsula for Atlantics and Kamatchka for Steelhead. Both are world class fisheries. But the Kola you'll see guys catching 30+ # atlantics hitting dries at 2am in daylight. Buddy used to guide there, and another friend regularly fishes it (wish I had his $$$$). Someday, but not today. LOL.

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
Brook trout in Maine ponds, Green river below Flaming Gorge, and Atlantic Salmon and sea run Brown Trout in Lapland. I would love a shot at Bluefish in the surf, too. These are on the list because they are likely going to happen. Taimen in Russia would be a blast but not likely.

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
For "slamonids" I would have to agree with Kamchatka. But since we're dreaming (at least I am), I would choose someplace extremely exotic where you really don't know what you might catch.
Freshwater, the Amazon would be great but Lake Victoria in Africa has nile perch up to 100lbs, plus tigerfish and god knows what else.
Saltwater, I would love to fish the northern Great Barrier reef for the endless array of species there. It would be cool stripping a Deceiver past a coral head and watching the shapes appear behind it in the crystal water.
It's a moot point though. I'm lucky if I can make it to the coast these days!

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
for what it's worth, kamchatka or the skeena system for steelhead.
and stateside: floating my home waters of northern wisconsin or upper michigan for smallmouth bass and muskies on surface flies. they get big and mean and ugly up there because the mosquitos keep most folks away...

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
I'm starting a new book my wife gave me. "Fly Fishing the 41st Parallel".
I'll report back if there is someplace in there you guys haven't mentioned.
Having said that, when I was in the service I was in a pretty remote area of Turkey with lots of streams. I've always wondered about them, maybe they are in the book.

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
It's a goal of mine to get to Kamchatka and Patagonia.
Others on the list were Alaska and New Zealand. I guided in Alaska, and I married a kiwi, so I've knocked those 2 magical locales off the list.
I heartily recommend NZ. Last month we were down there and fished the Taupo/Tongariro area. It was great. (Pete, by the way, the Taupo/Tongariro area is now all wild fish - not hatchery. The hatchery is there to maintain the species, in case of disaster, but the fish are not released locally) The Tongariro has the history, etc., but I prefer the South Island. On the same trip, my wife and I got dropped off by a bush plane high in the Southern Alps. We hiked out fishing along beautiful rivers with soaring glacial peaks towering above us. I just can't imagine that it will ever be better than that.
The great thing is that when I'm down there, I'm reminded that Oregon has a lot to offer, too, and it inspires me to rediscover Oregon.

Anywhere with my son that isn't crowded and full of trash. Our one big dream is to go Flyfishing with Flip Pallot for Tarpon in the Everglades.

Re: If you could fly fish anywhere in the world
Mr. B.T., Silver Creek is great (especially during the Drakes), but the crowds have gotten to the point that I can't stand. I hope to get up there during the week ans spend a few days this year during the "magic week".
