Default Poachers nabbed on the Owyhee...

Today I made my first trip of the year to the Owyhee River. On my way over, I stopped in Adrian to get my $61.50 out of state license. Jim at the market was telling us about a little maroon van with several folks that he suspected were keeping Browns. We saw the folks fishing (Bait). It looked like they might have had more lines in the water than they were allowed, but it was hard to see how many folks were hunkering in the van. Anyhow, a little while later we saw an undercover OSP truck had pulled them over. As we passed, the Trooper walked back to his truck with a plastic grocery bag full of big brown trout . I'm glad the law was out looking today. It is only the second time in 15 years I've seen OSP patrolling for fish and game violations. Good on 'em, and I hope they hang out there more . They could run DUI roadblocks in the summer too. I like a cold ONE after fishing, but the guys that down a 12'er on the lake and then almost run over me are scary(but that's a different story).

Sounds like a good bust. Now we'll have to see if the judge thinks they committed a crime and sentences them appropriately or just lets them go with a warning.

I'm originally from Ontario, OR. I've spent a a great deal of time on the Owyhee. A lot of guys have suspected that folks were poaching browns. Its obvious when you see the river there are lots of big brown trout. You can see them rising most of the time. There are plenty of eighteen + inch trout on the river. For you folks that fly fish on the west side of the state, do yourself a favor and spend a few days on the Owhyhee, the number of large fish is incredible, you can even catch 20 inchers on dry flies. Too bad about the poaching but I'm sure there are still plenty of lunkers left.
