Quick and easy Glo-bug
For anyone who uses these flies I have found an easy and quick way to make them.
Go to your local craft store and buy some pink, or whatever color you prefer, pom-poms.I got the ones that are about the size of a dime. They are very inexpensive too!
To make an "eyed" glo-bug just take a red Sharpie and make your dot.
Then take your glo-bug and simply thread it onto your fly hook using hot glue to anchor it.
If I had a digital camera I would post some pictures but since my wife won't let me use her Canon MD-10 you guys will just have to use your imagination.

Stew Good tip! I've made many that way. In fact, I almost used that instead of the bead on the tippet tip I used for the fly fishing tip contest. They hold scent real well too - D'Oh! Who said that? Certainly not a fly fisherman.

Re: Quick and easy Glo-bug
I just love those craft stores. I spend more time in Joanns than my wife does. I noticed they had a bag of 185 of the pompoms with the glittery tinsel for under 2 bucks a bag. These are thones that are the size of a #14 corkie. I have caught literally dozens of steelhead this year on those alone, just as Stew described.

Re: Quick and easy Glo-bug
I've used those as well, but think I still prefer to tie yarn on the hook, which I do very quickly with just two pieces on the outer side of the hook bend. After its trimmed and fluffed out it looks like a fully tied glo-bug.

Re: Quick and easy Glo-bug
just buy some glow bug yarn and some number 1 gami or owner bait hooks.. tie the bait hook onto your tippet with an egg loop and put a couple 3/4 inch pieces of yarn in the egg loop. pink and orange combo... yumm

Re: Quick and easy Glo-bug
the size of the trout I catch, I use the real actual pom-poms that cheerleaders use. they are about 18" dia. The big hogs love em!
Stew, I like the small white pom poms, they work well as a whitefish egg and work well on the metolius for the bows in late fall.

Re: Quick and easy Glo-bug
5 or 6 years ago I did an article for STS that talked about making pom-pom glo bugs. The recipe called for a 10mm light pink pom-pom, #4 octopus hook, zap-a-gap cement and a red sharpie.
Since McFly Foam came out, I haven't used pom-poms anymore. I can actually make glo bugs faster tying them with "foam" than gluing pom-poms on the hook.
For big eggs (size 6 & up, but usually just size 6), I like the eggo fly. It sinks like a rock so don't need any extra weight on the leader.

Re: Quick and easy Glo-bug
Hmmm,
I thought that Rob didn't use nymph tactics!
#2 scud hook, put it on the vise and heat it up with flame, touch a red plastic bead near the top and let it cool down.
Good stuff.

Re: Quick and easy Glo-bug
Speaking of craft stores, I bought a bag of goose biots in a store the other day, I got about 75 of them in a single bag, Its a great place to shop for fly tying gear...

Re: Quick and easy Glo-bug
Good tip Stew, craft stores hold a lot of misc. materials for tying many different flies.
Your talking about the little balls right? They have nothing hanging off them, just a little ball? I think I know what you are talking about. Does the thick yarn that craft stores hold up in the water? Or does it fall apart? Would I just be better off buying yarn from a tackle shop/fly shop?

Re: Quick and easy Glo-bug
Take a number 4 Gami black bait hook or better yet, one of their newer black, ring eyed, short shanked, glo bug hooks. Wrap the shank up to the eye with one layer of thread, whip finish. Take a single, paper towel dried, "jensen egg" and slide it up to the thread. Apply a couple drops of crazy glue and slide the egg up to the eye. Voila! Steelhead Killer. I've landed 74 winter steelhead since the end of Dec. and about 25% have been on this pattern!

Re: Quick and easy Glo-bug
One nice thing about Glo-bugs. They work great on a size 8 hook, because they don't interfere with the gape of the hook. Lots less snagging, and for me, I get better landing rates with most fish hooked right in the top of the tongue.
