Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
Ok, I'm jumping in and getting this party started.
The wife will be out of town for a week around the 1st of april, so I'm going to hit the Crooked River. Who wants to join me. We can head over early friday in time for the evening hatch, and fish and camp all weekend.
I'm going to pencil it in. Drop me a PM if you need any more info. We can also post info for gear if anyone needs stuff.
Let's get a good group together for this one.
Should be 101 tons of fun.
See ya there!

Can I bring my new Motion on the Crooked?
Other wise, I'm out. No, actually, that sounds like a stinkin' great boys weekend. I just don't think I can spend too much time fishing next to Liverwrecker with his hopped up bottle of hooch.
Good times!

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
WooHoo!!!! I've been waiting for someone to start talking about this again. At this point, I'm there!
Questions to be resolved:
1. Which campground?
2. Solid date?
3. Kids (teens) or no? got 2 OregonRedside smolts that might want to go
4. Everyone on their own for everything?
5. Best patterns for that time of year? Scuds, BWOs, March Browns????

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
Gotta warn you guys, Stew, Kodiakfisher and I went to a Crooked R. presentation last week so we'll have the inside edge. Of course, I'll gladly trade hot tips for swills of Bushmills. In fact, I might even let the proprietor fish my 3wt. for a swig.
OR - bring on the family, the more the merrier. You'll probably want to cover their eyes, though, when FRG grills his whitefish.
How about the Big Bend Campground... plenty of room for campers and lots of good water.

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
I'd love to meet up with you guys on the Crooked, April 1st to 4th. But....I can't fish on weekends, because of a family committment.
I will be over there sometime between March 22nd and March 25th for two days. I'll try to post after that with my results.
Good fishing! Remember...there's a fine line between fishing, and just standing by a river.

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
I have put it on my calendar.
I'd like to be there.
I will be recently back from vacation and might be swamped at work.
We'll see how badly I need a fishin' fix by then.
I'll bring my fabric fish for anybody who can't catch anything worth taking a picture of.

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
Royal - Here is what I learned my first time fishing the Crooked.
Campgear - When Greenbutt says he will bring camping gear, somebody is gonna be sleeping on the picnic table.
Flies - I have a couple dozen orange scuds I'll sell ya cheap (not really, so please don't delete this post).
River - man, there are fish everywhere in that river.
Seriously, I have extra campgear; just let me know what you need. Some GoTo flies are bwo's, hare's ears and pheasant tails. Check out Westfly for Crooked reports and flies. And super-seriously, there ARE fish everywhere in that river... they just don't always bite.

I want to go, and the odds of this happening are lookin fairly good. New job that doesnt require always require me to work weekends. Few areas of concern. Dont know the river. Dont have camp gear (wouldnt fit in my car on the way out here), and what patterns should I start tying?

I'd love to. Gotta check the boss' kitchen calendar first. Never hit the Crooked, but willing to learn. Been a D dude for a long stint.
Got a lot more stuff than I really need. Could share a tent...maybe. Please send a resume with references attached and color photos if possible.
I need this badly.
Thanks for bringin' it up.

maybe tillamook chinook will brew a batch of beer to bring. My wife can help Jim, and we have a keg and C02 for the process.
I like the pig roast idea too.

I don't know Giz, nobody ever sees you in the flesh. Maybe it's not really you writing this. Maybe the wife killed ya off and burried you in a bunch of wheatley fly boxes. You've become somewhat of a legend in these parts. A name brought up around the campfire, on a cold rainy night. One to raise the back hairs. Sort of like Bigfoot, only bigfoot has been seen before.

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
GBS,
I think it's too late to brew a special batch for the Crooked River trip. It takes at least two weeks for the primary ferment, then another couple of weeks in the bottles or keg. I will be gone on vacation from the 11th through 23rd. If I can make the trip I will bring some bottles from my last batch.
I do like the idea of a special batch for a special IFish Flyfish occassion, but I don't think this Crooked River trip will work.

GBS,
You know that after enough of RK's brew that anything smells and tastes good being slow roasted over an open fire.

Camp site of choice?
Short of the Bushmills photo, I am in vote of kids. I have 4-year-old that won't be coming, but think our children need to see their parents interacting and catching (trying to catch) fish outside of the home. Also, I don't need to "party." Kids are much more important than that.
The old days of piercing my ear with a BWO after a few brews are gone. On top of that, if you thought I was going over the edge already, I plan on bringing a little Jesus with me too!
And, that obnoxious contemporary Christian music like Skillet and PivotPlex.
Loving All Of You,

For the benefit of those going, how about you experienced crooked river guys post a few photos of the flys you think the new guys should have.
I know from experience, that certain go to patterns that are fished successfully, may be different than what the book shows.

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
I don't personally have any photos of goto flys, but here is one fly that produced some during the last Crooked River Rendezvous. If there would have been some kind of hatch at all it should have produced better.

News flash. I got to cut the trip short and come home after flickin' bugs early Sunday.
Movers show up at a clients' house on Sunday at 2:00. I gotta show my face.
I know this is really important info to all of you, but I don't have anything much more to say other than posting one of these about my enthusiasm!

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
Ok ok.. the time is getting near. For a crooked rook does someone want to send me a map, and give me a rough estimate of what gear i should bring? Any help would be appreciated.
Ohhh if i get the weekend off (Im not sure if its 100% yet). I'll get up there around 3 or so on friday, rough estimate of course.

Planning to head East around noon Friday.
Royal - despite what Greenbutt tells ya, if it is raining, bring your raincoat.
Getting close, how about a new count.

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
long time...been real busy with stuff. Anyway, I believe I'll be bringing myself and my pops. We'll get there sometime Friday morning (10-12ish). Now, I only need to know where there is and I'll be set. Never fished the Crook before. GBS, I'll email ya soon (despite all the things I hear from lilnorthfork!)

How about converging on the Big Bend campground? Plenty of campsites and fishy water.

I was by there a couple days ago. The water is very high and very green/brown.

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
I mentioned, a couple weeks ago, that I would be fishing the Crooked on March 24th and 25th. I didn,t go because of the extremely high flows above Prineville.
I did go to the Deschutes below Maupin on Thursday March 25th. Conditions were high and off. As a matter of fact, it's the highest I've ever seen the river, personnally. To make a long story short, we had three rods in the water for several hours. The results...one 11" trout. Pretty rough sleddin'.

Re: Spring Crooked river trip. April 2-4
Well, It looks like I am out. Months ago a good friend of mine called me and said a buddy of his from St. Louis is going to come to Portland this spring and was dying to try some salmon fishing. I told him that I would be happy to take them out. Well he called me last week and said his friend was going to be here the first weekend in April. Sorry guys, I would love to go but feel I already committed myself to my friend.
Thanks,
Tanner
