Famous Jesus?
I noticed in a Life in General thread that people have said Jesus is their famous friend.
This strikes me as odd.
Knowing that Jesus lived a life of charity and humility, it seems to me that he would shirk the idea of being called "famous," and that he might say something like, "Oh, Brother, please don't say such things. Fame is a vain notion, and will only encourage people to covet me. This is sin."
Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Re: Famous Jesus?
Jesus went out of his way to make sure he had alone time with His father.
Another interesting thing I hadn't heard of until recently is this: Jesus wasn't recognizable to the Roman soldiers that arrested him, that's why he needed to be betrayed by the kiss.
Granted, there were no camera phones or the Internet Machine back then, but I wonder how many people He walked by that didn't recognize Him.

Re: Famous Jesus?
Well, I think Jesus is "famous," in the sense that many people the world-over recognize his name, and have at least a vague notion of what he did. And, he said that anyone who would lay down his life for someone else is that person's friend. So, I guess in that sense he is a "famous friend."
Jesus, though humble and meek, was certainly liked by people. His first miracle was at a party. Children loved him. And less than a week before he was crucified, people wanted to crown him king. I have a hard time believing that God would have sent a sour-puss savior, and I do believe the friendships he built with his apostles are what allow us to call him our friend 2000 years after he lived on earth.

I think that you are giving the word famous a negative conotation. Just because someone is well known, does not mean it is a bad thing. Would you say that Billy Graham is famous? Would that be sinful to say that he is your friend.
No other person since the beginning of time has touched as many lives as Jesus Christ.
Jhn 12:47And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.
He came to save the whole world. I only wish the whole world loved Him back and it would be a great place to be. I can't wait for His return.
Please don't take this the wrong way, just another way to look at things.
God Bless and may all have a happy Resurrection Day.

Certainly no offense taken...I did not mean that it would be sinful to call Jesus, or Billy Graham, for that matter, my friend. (Though I do not hold Billy Graham and Jesus in the same light, so to speak.)
My question was about how Jesus might feel about being called famous. It just seems to me that there is a certain egoism, or vanity, that tends to come with fame. And I think Jesus would not want to be labelled famous, even though he certainly is.
I also think it is important to understand how your friends feel about the claims you make about them. Even though Jesus may be my friend, I would not call him my famous friend, because I don't think he would appreciate it.
Billy Graham is a totally different situation. He is famous, he is alive, and he is not the savior. Chumming around with him is a bit more 'worldly' than chumming around with Jesus, so I don't think the example really fits the question. What I mean here is that Jesus isn't a tangible human that I could sit and have coffee with, whereas Billy Graham is.
Thanks to the few people who replied here, and I welcome any response that one might want to share. I will not take offense, as I am just trying to understand other people's point of view. I don't really think there is a right or wrong answer here.

Re: Famous Jesus?
This thread is straying into the area of theology and that is not what the chapel is about.
This from the pinned statement at the top of the forum.
Quote:
Anyone of any faith is welcome to come here to join us to pray, to ask for prayer, and to join us in encouragement, in sympathy, or in joy, and to simply comfort one another.

And this

This forum is NOT about theology, which can lead to division.

So lets leave at what has already been said. Thank YOU.
