Default Suttle Lake

My family is going to Black Butte in June for a week. I thought it would be fun to take the kids fishing while we are there.

Suttle Lake is the only thing I know that is close by. Do they have boat rentals? Is there any decent bank fishing around there?

Any other local suggestions? I know about the Metolius but that's not so much the kids thing.

Look up Clear Lake in Linn County. They have row boat rentals and it's about a half hour drive from Black Butte. It's off 126 towards Sporingfield/Eugene. It's a great place for kids to fish.

Depends on what your doing. Great kokanee fishing (I'd hit up some of these guys). You can cast from shore for browns, but that can be tough as there are a lot of snags and blowdown along the side. You should go into the resort and check out the Behemoth that was pulled out a few years ago. Impressive!

What week in June? I hear Wizard Trout hatchery on the Metolius will be letting kids fish in their pond during free fishing weekend. It would be a fun place for the kids regardless.

Did Black Butte do away with that fishing lake on their property?

The lake is still there and still stocked. It is now catch and release only and I believe fly fishing only.

I have two teenage girls that are going that would lassooooo themselves with a fly rod. Besides, if we are that close to our house, they will want to walk home after minutes without success. I'd rather find someplace that will entertain them between bites.

On the Marina page it says that they have boat rentals.

This, and the Clear Lake tip, are probably the best suggestions. June can be good for juvi browns on worms, but the kokanee fishing can be really erratic in June, at Suttle. If you do fish Suttle, I recommend trolling, and I would expect lots of feeding schools from 15 to 25 deep.

Mike, do have a current water temp. for Suttle? I'm debating going there in the morning or back out to LBC.

Nothing since the 39 posted by Jimmy and B.Buff last week. Gotta be up a few, and getting CLOSE... The lodge has not gotten their temp probe in yet. Anybody??

I am also debating for tomorrow. Could be easily swayed. Could the lake turn on from nothing on monday for bucolic to somewhat agreeable biters in 5 days? My dad is in town and has become a koke fiend in short order after a trip to LBC last month. Still leaning towards LBC because I know he wants to try some trolling. But like the idea of 25 fish opportunity. Thoughts?

Well, it depends on how much driving you want to do. Go to Suttle and if it is dead pick up and drive to LBC where it should not take too long to get your fish. Then report back to us

Last year it went from double dead to all out hot bite in 7 days (41 up to 44 degrees is my recollection).

Heck, when I was a kid (about 18 yrs ago) we used to fish right off the docks and catch browns on worms all day. It was especially good in the evenings.

Fished today along with a buddy. The wind was blowing. Water temp was 42.9. Achored up on the west end, out of the wind, marked a good number of fish (anchored in 20' water)...had Gibbs Minnow, 2 other jigs, and one bait rod (though kids were at it....but buddy was after them next to us) and no biters. Guess they're waiting for the perfect temp. The wind seemed to keep most off the water, and for those on the water (2-3 boats total)....well, the wind makes things difficult. Either way, the kids had a blast, which is all that matters when getting kids into fishing. The day will come soon. EC

Three Creeks lake is usually good that time of year if there is not to much snow. Probably about 45 minutes from Black Butte.

Was at Suttle lake 4-10 to 4-11 and fished all over the lake. The east end was a little warmer then the west with morning surrface temps around 42, and in the afternoon they were close to 43 degrees. Couldn't find one koke that wanted to bite, but did manage to pick up 2 browns in the 18 inch range. Link creek campground is clear of snow, but I believe the water is not turned on yet.
