Default what about big brown trout ????

I just saw the poll regarding photo's of wild steelhead. I for one try not to even get wild fish out of the water, but I am not totaly aginst photo's if the fish is handled properly and not just yank around. but the issue I have is with groups like Brown Baggers that pursue huge brown trout and kill them????

I was a hard core brown trout hunter for a few years and got to know some very seriouse hunters of brownies and all of them had fish on the wall and fish at the taxidermy shop. Most of them have no problem killing a huge brown trout which could litereally be the biggest fish in the lake and possibly very very old. Even in great magazines like S.T.S they( trophy trout fisherman) almost always have there hands in the gills of some fish. And in the last article I saw about "trophy trout the size of your leg" they had photo's of a guy with two huge browns he killed and photo's of other trout that where killed. I do not know any of the writers personaly but I see the huge fish they kill and read the storys they put out and it bothers me a little.

They are great fisherman as are the mass majority of seriouse brown trout hunters but as far as any given group goes I would venture to say they kill the most trophy fish of any groups I know. And they always say that the fishing is getting harder and the huge browns that used to be shallow are no longer around but they dont seem to realize the main reason may be, because they are great fisherman who have killed them off. I know most of us are steelhead and salmon guys and girls but what do you think? Is killing a huge lake living brown trout the same as killing a wild steelhead to any of you?

The title of the thread made me think you wanted a Willamette report

I think killing a large native trout isn't too cool but since browns aren't native it doesn't bother me much. Of course the guys that are doing the killing are the ones who are hurting themselves.

Nope, not the same. Brown trout are an introduced species. They are put there by ODFW to grace my photo collection, my wall and my frying pan. Nothing native about them. Sure are fun to catch, though.

DJ has it right. I still don't like to see released fish die but browns are a non indigenous fish and if they completely disappeared from Oregon waters it wouldn't stop us from fishing.

Isn't there a big brown trout hatchery on the Toileton River near Hillsboro?

I chase my version of "hog brown trout" with the flyrod. I do everything in my power to release each one alive and kickin'. Sometimes they inhale the streamer and it is hooked deeply. I cut those guys off, and do what I can to resuscitate them.

I think the guys that kill the 10 year old lake dwellers are egomaniacs. They need to have the trophy, and they don't want anyone else to catch a fish bigger than theirs. They kill the fish partly because they don't want it to grow any bigger, and then have someone else catch it. There are plenty of places that do replica mounts. You can net the fish (in a rubber net for that matter), take the appropriate measurements while it's in the water, a quik photo or two, and release it to grow bigger. Everyone wins.

I've learned that a 14" brown is much tastier than a 4 lb.-er. I release the big ones when I'm lucky enough to get 'em.

I keep my trophies in my memory, where they don't take up much space ... although I've probably misplaced a few over the years.

Brown trout are a problem fish in many streams and river systems. For many years the Idaho fish and game Dept have been trying to eliminate that species from the Snake river below Palasaides Res.
For many years we fished for brook trout in small streams near Kilgore Id. One year someone decided it would be cool to intorduce Browns .
After that we stopped fishing the creeks. You couldnt catch any brook trout and now and again you would get a 5 lb brown. The browns had completely changed the system. It has never come back .
Browns are a non native , dominant preditor and I kill every one I catch ,, within the law. id. painter P.S. I have a 13 lber on my wall. I killed him with total pleasure.

Brook trout are a non indigenous fish too. In my area they have been eliminated from many streams to make room for the native bull trout.

Ya, I know , my point was that Browns can be devistating to other fish in a system.
Idaho fish and Game are trying to get rid of the browns in the snake river to save the native Cutt's. I have seen the Browns become the dominant fish in too many lakes and streams. I would rather catch a nice fat Rainbow and they are not native either. id. painter

IDon’t know about in the lakes but in streams we need to remove the largest fish so the smaller ones can move up in the food chain and gain a little size. Brooks and browns are both introduced species but that does not make them bad. Cutthroat and bull trout grow to slow to keep up with the pressure are population puts on these fishier. That why rainbows, browns and brooks were introduced in the first place. As far as trophy fishing goes as long as they are with in the limits then its ok with me. That’s why the limits are there to help keep the population healthy. I don’t believe you are doing any great good by not taking your limit. Limits are set to remove the excess fish that are over the carrying capacity of the stream. Just as hunting deer keeps the population down to where the land can support the population. That’s why I don’t like trout streams that are c and r only. They tend to have a lot of small fish and no medium or large fish.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Not quite the same, but in either case, once you kill the fish, it's tough to catch it again. If you like to catch fish, there is a pretty good argument to let them go. The bass fishermen figured this out a long time ago, and I always thought we were a bit smarter than Jimmy Houston.

How did the catching a bigger fish then your buddy and bragging rights become "your a eggomaniac"...fishing has always been a sport of spending time with good friends and family and trying to catch the biggest fish you can and rubbing it in to your buddy...I see alot of tree hugging standing behind the word eggomanic....DJ

ALL Y'ALL quit with the "boneless" trout quips. We don't do that kind of humor here. Maybe you can entertain each other with under-the-arm poot noises.

I also love brown trout but they compete directly with our native fish stocks and they don't need anymore competition than they already have.

I would disagree with the hole kill the browns to get the brookies. And just flat killing every one you can when the massive majority of rainbows in the states are planted either as juveniles by plane or as catchable fish .

and fisherman of any species can be jerks not only brown trout fisherman.
