Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
Anyone up for another one yet? Winter steelhead flies this time? Who wants to run it?
Let's get some input before we proceed.

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
Ok Stew, that's not supposed to be a funny is it? How about if I just say that I am definitely not interested in being the Swap Meister However I will tie some flies up and send them to you weeks in advance.

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
I'd do it, but there is one catch. I just got a vise for Christmas and have only tied three flys so far. Much harder to get it to look like the picture than I thought it would be. Looks like I'll be taking a class real soon. But if we have many for snow days, I may get the hang of it sooner.

I'd definately join in, can't host it though, I think you all understand my time is a bit limited lately! Things are going great and we are starting to get into a routine. Let me know when to get tying!

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
I did not participate or pay attention to the earlier fly swap. But I would be interested in participating in a fly swap.
If there was difficulty in distribution of of the flies the last time around, maybe we should combine the fly swap with the next flyfishers "meet up". If we knew there would be ten guys/gals coming we could each tie up ten flies of a favorite pattern and just swap them in person.

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
Greenbuttskunk,
If all that is keeping you from tying some flies I have two extra vices. Now if you're looking for an excuse to spend some more time with that cute son of yours I can't loan you either of them.
Actually one of them I wouldn't wish on anyone but a rookie and then they would appreciate a really good vice when they replaced it. The vice is an old Herters. You could borrow my thompson though.
I would be willing to participate I could tie an original shrimp pattern or a babine special (double egg pattern).
Lilnorthfork are you in for some single egg patterns?

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
I don't really need any fly's right now, but I do have about 3 dozen small trout fly's I'd be happy to give to people who would put them to good use. I bought them at an estate sale years ago and they're just sitting in a drawer.

Is this the comedian section or flyfisher section? you guys crack me up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember when you see my flies it's not what they look like it's if you can get them in front of the fish that counts.

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
Ok, I'll volunteer to broker this one, since I got a new vice for christmas. Here's how I would imagine it proceeding:
15 people in the swap (everyone ties 15 flies). So far, we have
Stew
Rpnsteelheadlps--Black Egg Sucking Leech
Tillamook Chinook--Martha
Greenbuttskunk
Gas Jockey--Pink Puff
JeepMcMuddy
Kodiak Fisher--Stefan's Shrimp?
Samonslayer2
Deefly--Orange and Purple Deefly
Oregonredside--Double Egg Sperm Fly
Riverkeeper--Polar Shrimp
Draggin Bottom--Shooting Star
Navigator--Pink&White Bunny Leech
Stevo
That's 13 so we have room for 2 more. All flies to me by Friday February 6th, to be sent out 1 or 2 days later. Also please include a self addressed envelope with sufficient postage with your flies. You snooze, you lose. No gadgets, troutflies, gift certificates, only steelhead flies you tied. Everyone please get back to me with what pattern you want to tie, I'll post it on here. If you plan to tie a weighted pattern, say so. If you want in, or you're on the list and you want out, say so soon!
Does this sound OK to everyone? I'll tie a Polar Shrimp.
NOTE: Corky and yarn is NOT a winter steelhead fly!

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
Is this a surprise thing, or do we list the pattern we're going to be tying? And do we get to know who tied which pattern?

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
Stew: Done.
ORS, you tell me your pattern and I post it next to your name above.
My feelings won't be hurt if we want to do this a different way, or if someone else wants to take charge- I just thought I'd step in since I appreciate the efforts some of you guys put into running the last swap.

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
OK, I'm in if you don't mind a rookie in your swap. I'm going to tie a variation of the Pink Puff. It's weighted with a dumbbell head and kinda looks like a shrimp, but flashier. We'll see how they turn out.

Put me down for a "Double Egg Sperm Fly" - similar to this, but not exact.

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
Hey All,
If there is room for another. Count me in. I've not participated in a swap before, but it sounds fun. If I need to commit a certain fly now, I'll make it a tube whatyamacallit. If not, it could change to that thinkamajig, er, thingamafly. Let me know if i'm in.

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
Oregon redside,
Is that double egg sperm fly similiar to a babine special (two eggs long shank hook and some white maribou)? What color are you going to tie? I could tie a different color if they are similiar.
If these two flies are too similiar I will instead tie my original shrimp pattern (stefans shrimp). I will have to get started on these ASAP.

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
kodiakfisher - I tie them with two eggs - pink or salmon colored - a few wraps of flat tinesel between the eggs and a little marabou tuft off th head - if a double egg sperm fly has a head.
I added pic to previous post

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
I have four of my 15 fly's tied. As someone new to tying, I can honestly say my back is killing me, my eyes are buggin, and I can barely type on the keyboard. I hope with time I learn to relax. If not, I may have a heart-attack at the age of 33. So how many fly's are we suppose to tye, five?

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
GasJockey - here are some basic ergonomic tips for you and all fly tiers:
1. Put something behind your fly or on the table that you can use as a background - something that will provide good contrast between the background and your fly. This will greatly reduce eye strain and fatigue.
2. Use good posture - don't slouch if you can help it. Feet flat on teh floor, a chair that supports your back. Roll up a bath towel and put it between your lumbar region of your back and the back of the chair.
3. Tie one fly and wait 5 min or so before the next one.
4. During that five minuts, stretch the muscles in your shoulders, and roll your head around, stretching the muscles in your neck. Also, visually focus on something at a distance for awhile.
5. Consider using a magnifying light - the kind that clamps onto the table and has an articulating arm - especially for smaller flie.
This should help with the fatigue.
Oh, and uh...that's 15 flies buddy - one five!

If the total is 15 (I'm pretty slow!) I'd like in. Did a couple of these through Westfly, and I love them, they are a blast.
Thanks

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
Hey Riverkeeper and the rest.
I'm gonna have to change my fly choice. Seems I don't have enough flexible tubes for 15 flies and haven't been out of my driveway this week. So make mine a Shooting Star variant. BTW, still freezing rain as of early this morning in Gresham.
Thx, DB (Bryan)

Re: Okay who is ready for another fly swap?
I tied my 15 steelhead flies a couple of days ago when it looked like the freezing rain was coming and we left work early. I tied 15 "Martha" pattern.
Then I checked back at the top and this thread and saw that they are supposed to be "Winter" steelhead flies. The "Martha" pattern is a winter pattern if you fish with it in the winter. Since it is an archaic pattern from 1900 it probably hasn't been fished much for winter fish. I have caught summer fish on it. It was described in the Trey Combs book on flyfishing for steelhead. My wife's name is Martha, so I tied some from the recipe and liked the way they looked.
And it is still true, I have never caught a winter steelhead under 18 lbs. on a fly.
