Default Salmonberry Advice Wanted

I casually fished for a long time growing up in the Midwest. I moved out to Oregon a few years ago and was exposed to fly fishing. This is the greatest thing I have come upon in years! It is so serene and relaxing, some of my best days include no fish. But just the feeling of leaving the known world for a day-with only nature around is awesome. In return, I have passed this on to my father and others who need a major release in life.

I am looking for any info about the SalmonBerry. I have only been down there to scout the area...
Thanks!

I don't know a whole lot about that river, but I do know the access is walk-in only, up the train tracks from the confluence of the Salmonberry and mainstem Nehalem. It is a nice walk, few people around. I think they may get a native winter or two in there...

No fish...ya right Isn't this river supposed to have the largest native steelhead on the northern coast? Or maybe thats the "other" salmonberry.

It gets alot of pressure though. I've been there when a fish saw me from the railroad tracks, about 30 ft above the river, and freaked out all over the hole and bailed. An impressive display of speed and fear, as well as vision.

RK,

One of the most beautiful rivers to fish in Oregon. Solitude, great scenery-(SP), awesome water with a mixture of swinging water and indicator water. It gets a few hatchery strays but the majority are native. It is not easy fishing but the payoff is well worth the effort of walking in. Plan on spending the day. One word of wisdom wear comfortable wading boots. I take a pack with my waders etc. and wear comfortable boots to hike in. Later the better!

Good Luck,

Buckgtr

The Salmonberry is a beautiful river to fish, not so much to catch fish. There are a lot of people on the lower few miles, and it really is no fun to fish. I would suggest using some of the roads off 101, like Salmonberry Rd. or Shields Rd., to get to the upper river for better water and more solitude. Also, don't bother fishing this river until late January at the earliest. Fishing will build from then, getting better and better until closing day March 31. Sighting fish from the tracks and then fishing them is a very effective way to fish this small river. Light leader in fluorocarbon is the only way to go on this river. One more thing, RELEASE ALL WILD STEELHEAD!!!!!!!

Another thing, watch the trains. Certain stretches, the noise from the river will mask that of the train. Tressles and tunnels aren't fun when you don't know they're coming.
