Default Your expert opinion needed on reel!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 9wt Jim Teeny rod that has been sitting in a delivery box for about a year now and I still have not found a reel for her. I have always been able to fish and catch fish with middle class hardware. I don't need the most expensive thing to catch fish. I just want to have fun fighting an Oregon Steelhead on a fly!!! Any reel recomendations????

I would take a look at the Redington reels. They are sturdily built and reasonably priced. The Okuma fly reels look pretty solid too.
Good luck

Ross Reels. I will put their quality up against anyones, and the price is reasonable. Throw in their lifetime warranty and you can't beat them. Yu can pay more for a reel but you won't find a better one.
I have fished proabably a dozen different reels from Hardy to Pfleuger to Cortland to STH. Ross is the best I've found.

My 89 is a SA Mastery. Great reel, not real pretty (reels aren't my type anyhow  ) Picked it up on e-bay brand new for half-price, included a new $40 line. E-mailed 3M about where to pick up a spare spool and got one n/c in the mail 3 days later. IMHO, the Orvis Battenkill Disc is a great value for the money. I have it in a 3wt.
How about you tell us what your budget is and we'll all see who can come up with the best deal on a reel for you. Could be a fun contest that doesn't cost anybody anything... except you of course.

I have had a couple of okuma integrity 9/10s for a couple of years that I paid $50 a piece at sportco. Never had a problem, fought a fair amount of fish. Like them even better than my old lamson.

The sponsored guy at sportco (I forget his name, but he has written stuff)swears by them. He takes a few up with him to Alaska and has no issues.

cortland has a good deal if you go to their web site and click on the factory store, everything is 50% off, some good prices can be had on ebay as well. I just bought a Loop for 85.00 on ebay, good luck....

You should take a serious look at the Ross Cimarron, Teton Tioga, and Scientific Angler System II. That would be my order of preference but they are all in the same quality class and similar prices +/- $50.

Better yet, you might also consider the Pfleuger for a click & pawl and save some big bucks. I don't own one but I know some folks that have only that. Pick it up and monkey with it, you can tell its a sound reel. The big ones retail for $50 or less I believe, which is $100-$200 less than the others I suggested.

River City Flyshop in Beaverton sells a Echo for around $70. Disc drag. Large arbor. Nothing fancy.

I bought an Okuma and spare spool at Ollie Damon's a couple of years ago. I think it was about $80 for the reel and $40 (?) for the spool. Wide arbor. Nice drag. I think he still has some in his case.

I bought an Okuma reel from Sportsman's Warehouse in salem for $55. I like it, it's got a really nice drag and it was cheap too. It seems like a really sturdy reel. My buddy has one too and loves it. I would suggest an Okuma for a great not so expensive reel.

I've used a Bauer LM4 for Steelhead, Salmon and Bonefish. Bulletproof reel, super smooth drag and a very clean construction. I've dumped it in saltwater everyday for a week and just hosed it off. Never a spec of rust.

Bauer discontinued them for '03, but you can still see them popping up on Ebay, new in box, or you can find a good used one.

Yarndog,
I have the same rod and I bought one of the Orvis close-out Redington 9/10 AL reels. I paid $70 and have been very happy with it. I put the AirFlo versatip line on it. I did add an extra 10' type 10 tip to get down in the Sandy River in Winter time. Those reels are still around if you look.

I'd say Teton/Tiogas or SA system II's. They are both great reels for decent money. I would warn you about the new pfluegers. I have old ones, and they are tanks. But I had a few newer ones (made in china) that literally fell apart on me. My USA pfluegers are still going strong (well, only have one left, maybe two, sold rest off with my old rods).

Nice thing about the SA's, you can find them pretty darned cheap on ebay. Make sure you have a plain system II. You will find a system 2L, which are actually smaller reels. So, you if you have a system 2 89 and a system 2L 89 you'll find them alot different in size.

I would go to River City and get an Echo. I also have a redington RS2 that has caught salmon and steelhead, I dont think they make them anymore so they are only $60 or so on ebay, well worth the price.

I would stay away from Okuma.

Ross reels have always done me well. I use them on my trout rods (4,5 wgt) and steelhead rods (7&8). Have used them in salt for bones aswell and never had any issues. My Spey rod set-up came with a Reddington and that works great aswell. Both brands are middle of the road, pricewise.
Tight lines.

I would get a adventure 7 g loomis reel. They are awesome. I have one on my lamiglas rod. I would go with one of those. They are about 100 or so bux but well worth it.
