Default Deschutes Report 11/28

After entertaining some notions of going to the coast and bait fishing for salmon, I came to my senses early yesterday morning (with some help from the weather forecast) and headed east with the fly rod. My dad and I made a leisurely trip up to Maupin via the Dalles, and ended up fishing the last half of the day just above Mack's Canyon swinging purple and black patterns over the cobbled shelves. The bad news: we didn't touch any fish, or see any fish (steelhead that is). The good news: it was a beautiful day on a river that I simply can't get enough of.

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving weekend.

Man I love the look of that picture. Did you float the river? or are there places to wade?

Royal, we drove and waded. On either side of the town of Maupin, there are 10 or 15 miles of road along the river (paved and gravel), public access. Upstream near warm springs, there is lots as well.

What a great river the Deschutes is! Even on those fishless days the draw of that river is so appealing.
Thanks for the picture Darian

Thanks for the picture of my favorite river. I fish the Deschutes about 50 days a year, but only about once every other week in the winter. Now's the time for winter steelhead on the west side of the Cascades, but for some days of real action, I need those redsides on the D in winter.

By the way, I am primarily a lurker on this site, but I am happy to see an increase in posts and activities by flyfishers here.

Great picture Riverkeeper!! It's my favorite river too. I took a pic in early June at Mecca Flat and it turned out so well it has been the wallpaper on my desktop ever since. I probably won't fish it again until March while I mine for winter chrome at the coast and the Sandy. My last trip over was the end of Sept. Went to Macks for the weekend but moved up above the White the second day due to glacial silt. Managed to hook an 8# hatchery buck which I handed off to my daughter. She's now a confirmed fisherman. Good pik. I like that run but it's tough to get in prime time.
I gotta get me a digi cam one of these days...
