Default Hello all.

Well as you can probably see, I am a newbie to this forum, so I figured I would introduce myself.

My name is Casey, and I just moved to Oregon from Duluth Minnesota. There are numerous fishermen out there, but the only time I ever saw any of them with a fly rod was the steelhead season. Once the regular season opened the rivers and mouths were incredibly less congested.

I picked up the sport of fly fishing about two years ago, and have had very little instruction except for what I have picked up from reading books and what little help my friends could be. I also have been (attempting) to tie flys for about 8 months. I learned the basics from hanging around my local fly shop watching the owner work his magic on the vice.

My point of joining this forum was to meet people who share my love of fly fishing, and hopefully learn a lot about the local area. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Casey

Welcome aboard Casey.

A lot of good information can be had reading this section and asking questions.

There are ff clubs in both Portland and Vancouver that have monthly meetings and learning activities.

Glad to have you here.

Casey,

Welcome to the Pacific Northwest. It's a fly rodders paradise. You will find more water to explore than you will have a lifetime for. I get out when I can and have many places on my "must get to this year" list that I haven't gotten to yet. Keep your eyes open on the forum for "open seats." A few of the members will post this when they are going out and don't have a full boat or truck. This is a great way to learn new areas. Drop me an email and maybe I can help you get started in some areas.

There is no pattern page, yet. Jennie (forum starter) is too good to be true. If the guys on this side of the board want it, she'll find a way to make it happen.

Good Luck,

Mark

Welcome Royal. Glad you waded right in; the water is mighty fine. How about joining us on the Crooked River the weekend of Dec. 14th... just like icefishing only with flies and no tip-ups.

Welcome! You'll feel right at home here as I think most of Minnisota has already come to Oregon.

Anyhow, once you, as a Minnisotan, get over the initial shock of seeing water in liquid form during Nov-March, you'll enjoy all the opportunity here. There is truly not a single week out of the year when you can't find good to awesome flyfishing.

welcome Casey!
Although the pacific NW does not have the caliber of flyfishing that Duluth Minn has, (the birthplace of flyfishing) it will try to accomodate ya. Bet we've fished some of the same waters back in Minn? I fished there growing up.
You'll love all there is here to flyfish, it will bogle the mind. You've got a good group here, so don't be shy, any one of us would take you under the wing and show you around, me included.
Try to make our next get-together on dec. 2nd.
and I'll share some spots with you over a brew.
cheers,
GBS

Welcome aboard Royal. If you are looking for some tips, a good place to start is the search section here in ifish. Do a search under a river name (make sure your searching the fly section) and you will more than likely find lots of tips and patterns. Good luck and your just in time for the winter fish!

Well I appreciate everyones tips.

My girlfriend just moved out here and has had some troubles finding a job, needless to say she has been a bit stressed out. So today to relax her (and me) we took a drive out towards the sandy. All i can say is that I was really impressed with the stretch of rivers that I saw. I can't wait till I can put on my waders and start casting. My question about the sandy is it just a steelhead river or are there some trout in there as well.

As I have stated, I am a bit of a novice still, but I have done some steelhead fishing but with no luck. My luck lays in fishing for bows and brooks . Is this a good river for that caliber? I dont care if they are trophy fish, I just like the solitude of fishing. I'm sure I will talk to most of you when I apear at the gathering, but am always up to talk shop on here.

Royal,

There are lots of steelhead and salmon in the Sandy (adults and smolts), but you could do much better for trout. If you haven't already, check into the Deschutes watershed (which includes the upper D, middle D, lower D, Crooked, Metolius, etc). It is a trout wonderland, and why we haven't yet declared the whole darn thing a National Park is beyond me.

I live in SE Portland as well, and would be happy to shoot the line about things with you sometime, on or off the river.

Royal,

As another out of towner I welcome you to this great state. You won't find a better bunch of guys anywhere else that will be more than happy to take you under their wings to teach you the finer points of fly fishing (plus that WD-40 technique that Stew tries to hide from everyone). If you're ever out this way for steelhead (towards Hooterville) drop me a line and I'll see if I can get some time out of my busy schedule to get some fishing in.

Again, welcome!
