Re: Human Scent and Fly Tying
The natural materials used on most flies have their own smell. So do the synthetics. The nature of MOST fly fishing is a small morsel floating past at a fairly rapid rate, and the fish doesn't usually have time to sniff the fly. When stripping wet flies, again the bug is moving and the fish wouldn't necessarily have time to "sniff" the fly. Compare the surface area of a size 14 Adams to the surface area of a K-15 Kwikfish, that's gotta factor into it.
That being said, I have heard folks talk about human (and gasoline, sunscreen, or bug spray)scents before. I use a natural Cul de Canard oil flotant that Renee Harrop developed, and one of it's touted features is that it covers human scent. I'm not sure how many green drakes or blue winged olives smell like a duck's butt, but maybe every little thing helps. I'm not going to start washing my nymphs in algae (or OregonRedsides' spit) .
