Default Ifish Fly Fishers Crooked R. Rendevouz

We talked about this last week at the pizza place and decided that this coming spring we are going to do it. If we start planning now it can be a great event!
Who is interested?

I'm in. I say we do it sooner, like december, if the fishing forecast is good. If cold-weather camping is a deterrent, I know of some very inexpensive motels next door to some very questionable taverns in Prineville . If we wait till spring, I'm in also, but I may get mixed up and rig up a prawn spinner on my 4 weight.

I'm in on that crooked river trip stew. I love that river and have put in many hours on it to get dialed in. We'd all have a blast out there. Great camping opportunites too.
See ya all there next spring!

Me Me Me Me!! I'm with Riverkeeper, Spring is 2 whole seasons away. Who wants to do one at the end of Nov./begin of Dec.? If Greenbutt brings his shotgun and a couple boxes of shells we can all share a chukar.
Besides, FallRiverGuy might get lonely waiting 4 months for someone to wander into his territory.

I will drive and have room for 1 (small truck) or take your rig if someone wants to link up at the Crooked River. Do a day trip in late Nov or Dec

Stew,

The weather is rarely bad over here. It has been on the cool side lately with high temps in the low to mid 30's and a few snow showers. Having said that, even with a few snowflakes, if you dress warmly it is not worse, and often nicer, than fishing a coastal stream for steelhead in the winter. As long as the wind is not blowing the worst you have to deal with are frozen guides and few people.

Come on over, the water's fine!

I hate fishing with a frozen guide. They just stand there blue-faced with this blank look. Where do I cast, what do I use?? Like you get an answer! Hey LNF, nice rip about my shooting skills! ya sure I was like 1 for 16, but I got one did'nt I! I just did'nt want to show off, that's all. yah, that's the ticket!
I'm in for a late fall early winter fishig trip over there, some really nice fish come during the late months, and no people.
Lets' do it.

If there is room for a stranger or two, my son and I might like to come. He's 18.

I fished the Crooked and camped out three Februarys ago. We got some fish. It was fun trying to pull fish up from the anchor ice. Tough to shoot line, though, when it is frozen to your rod!

Stew, I'll bring some hot cocoa and warm socks for you so your tootsies don't get cold.

LNF, Stew, you guys need to get a room!
So are we talking about a later fall or early spring trip out there? Start tying some black an patterns, they can be killer fished up along the banks in spring. Must not forget the orange scuds too. But whatever you do make sure you have a good assortment of small BWO's and light cahills,
hendrickson's too.

If we want to do a late fall trip how does the first or second weekend in December sound? This would be after Thanksgiving and before Xmas and steelhead.

I'd be down for the spring trip. February and March are 2 really good months to fish the Crooked. I will be down there New Years weekend fishing for a day while I am visiting my sister and brother in law in Prineville for the weekend. I have had some of my best days on that river in early March.

So lets try for the 13th or 14th then. Depending on the weather(i.e. big snows in the pass making the trek over unsafe) plans might have to change.

The river is PERFECT right now, in fact i just may have to take a lil ride up there this weekend for a couple hours! If i do, ill let you know how it goes! Also, this time of year i seem to have gotten better fish thatn the warmer months. GBS, ill also have my shotgun and dog ready to go! Dont forget the dry flies people, if you only bring scuds youre in trouble!See you then!! The only IFisher ive fished with is FRG so ill look forward to this!

last month there were a TON of small BWO's and light mayflies, assentially four different hatches going off at the same time. The were arll small, I'd say #20 being average. We hooked many fish that day, and used an assortment of small BWO's and anything light. Of course december could be different, but the BWO will be standard hatch I'll bet. The orange scuds are always a good bet, and small nymphs also.

Why not do a December pre-fish and then another one in March? There's no reason you can't go twice in one year unless you just don't want to.

So Stew,
Are you and Giz thinking of tent camping or what. If we do this we must gather for breakfast at a place called Dad's in downtown Priney Ville. I don't know if it is the same now but if you aren't full when you walk out of Dad's then ya got a big ol' tape worm.

Now we're talking. I didn't mean to hijack the spring trip in favor of a fall trip. I'm up for both.

An early spring trip to the crooked will be the perfect bridge between springer fishing and my 4 month lower Deschutes summer onslaught.

I have fished it a few times and would be interested if I can make the trip over the mountains. Keep me posted.

Here's an idea....

I have two certificates, each good for a free night's stay at a Motel 6.

I looked up on the net and see that there is a Motel 6 in Redmond.

We could do the Crooked on Saturday, then go eat dinner and stay the night in Redmond at Motel 6. Wake up Sunday morning, get breakfast, then hit the Metolius for a while Sunday and come back via Santiam pass.

2 rooms would take care of lodging for 4 guys.

One certificate expires 12/13, the other 12/17.

Let me know if anyone is interested.

Mike

Is it time to start talking carpool yet? I'm hoping to leave the Grove around noon Friday and return when the party is over on sunday. I'll probably tow a little enclosed trailer full of firewood and whiskey (that way Greenbutt won't have to go into town a coupla times a day  ) so there is room for 3 others and gear... or 4 if someone is bringing a date

Was nobody interested in my offer to stay overnight at the Motel 6 in Redmond on Saturday night, then hit the Metolius Sunday on the way home?

Mike- thanks for the offer; very generous of you. I don't get to camp nearly enough, so I'll opt for the tent. Of course, when the temps dip down into the teens, you might want to leave the light on. I'm all over the Metolius on Sunday if anyone else is game. Maybe Greenbutt can show us the way to da bulls.

Only nine more days to go! Good news GBS. I guess I had better spend a few hours at the vice myself.
