Default First Try Alone

I finally got some time to try steelheading on the Deschutes this last weekend. I was amazed to see how many dedicated fisherman were in every hole I wanted to try. Oh, well its the experience that counts right. I didn't have any luck with that, but I did hook into some nice redsides in the middle of the day on drys. So that took some of the sting out. Talking with my life long friend John Smeraglio at Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop, he said the numbers are showing that it has been an average year and that the fish are throughout the river. Just my luck. I get stung with the bug last year and fewer fish show up. what is that all about. Now, if I can just win the big one so I can have more time to fish.

Well, the good news is , you caught fish ! hang in there. So far the only Steelie I've caught was by accident, throwing a wooley bugger at cutthoats on the Wilson ( on a 5wt no less )I was lucky she was small. Still ran my butt all over H_ll and back. Now I'm hooked, got a 7 wt tied up a bunch of flies and have been blanked ever since. Problem is I'm addicted ( if that's really a problem ) Hope springs eternal !

Cheers

If you go there often enough you will figure out the best drifts and count on getting your arse out of bed veeery early if you wanna snag the prime spots.
I'm done with competing for the big runs, I like to float and fish the overlooked little spots.
Weekends??? No way for me, it's been bad enough on the weekdays.
Good luck, be vigilant and aggressive!!!

There are fish all over that river. Try spots that are being pounded and you will be surprised. I try to find a new spot each time I go and so far a lot of them have panned out.
