It seems like the better tyers are always raving about good maribou and poor maribou (I'm not in this category). I just use the regular blood quills maribou for jigs, I'm not quite sure what the rave is about schapplen or big long maribou feathers. I strip a big hunk off of the feather and tie it on. With multi-color jigs that works great because you get a big hunk of one color, tie it on, then get a big hunk of the other color. For a 1/0 hook it takes about 4 hunks. Like I said I don't know what the big ta do is, maybe quicker tying if you don't have to strip the fibers off the quill? I don't think the final product is much different. The schapplen jigs that are used on First Cast Jigs are indistinguishable from mine regarding the look of the plume and the action in the water, at least to me and presumably the fish.
