Default Schlappen hackle and Marabou...

Where are your favorite places to get this stuff? I guess I'm kind of looking for the cheapest and best quality, I'm what you'd call, the poor college student. In my steelhead fishing class (yes, it's a class here!!) yesterday I tied two flies, and I thought it was really cool. I am a jig fisherman, but the same materials are used on flies and jigs (primarily - I'm not an expert on flies...please don't criticize me). I thought to pass the time during the winter when the rivers are out of shape, I could try my skill at tying up some jigs.
Any other critical information I'd also appreciate.
Thanks!

best schlappen I ever bought was at Waters West in Port Angeles, WA. That's a bit far to drive for some feathers, but you asked.

Do you want to pick it up or mail order it? Look on 4th st in Corvallis across from Starbucks or check out Valley Flyfisher in Salem. I might have some recomendations as far as having some shipped to you, but let me look for my catalogs first. I can email you more info. How much do you need and what colors? I picked up a bunch of marabou online while ordering spinner parts, I might be able to help you out. Mike

River City Fly Shop in Beaverton has a vast selection of fly tying material. The owner Don Nelson is a really great guy who will go out of his way to help you out. Here is a link to the website River City

It seems like the better tyers are always raving about good maribou and poor maribou (I'm not in this category). I just use the regular blood quills maribou for jigs, I'm not quite sure what the rave is about schapplen or big long maribou feathers. I strip a big hunk off of the feather and tie it on. With multi-color jigs that works great because you get a big hunk of one color, tie it on, then get a big hunk of the other color. For a 1/0 hook it takes about 4 hunks. Like I said I don't know what the big ta do is, maybe quicker tying if you don't have to strip the fibers off the quill? I don't think the final product is much different. The schapplen jigs that are used on First Cast Jigs are indistinguishable from mine regarding the look of the plume and the action in the water, at least to me and presumably the fish.

sparkleboy,
where are you taking classes at? WOSC? or OSU?

Anyway, im in the same boat as you........I prefer the low cost-high quality stuff too  . I would reccomend the Valley Flyfisher out off of south commercial street in South Salem. He has very good prices, a good selection, and quality stuff.
