Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
I've been using pipe insulation that I cut into Foot long pieces and put a strip of duct tape around the ends. This works well but the only problem is My vest doesn't have huge pockets and I only have room for one pipe in the front of my vest. I can put more in the back but when wading it's a hassle to get them out. Thinkin about trying Pip's and am curious to know what everybody thinks of them?
thanks

Egg Flinger,
Yes I use them, they are great. Some of them work better than others though and I am not sure why. Some slip easier when spinning your leader onto them and others are harder to wind up.
Hope this helps....

There great when there new. I've noticed that the more I use it the harder it is to turn. Maybe I just got a bad one.

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
I use a variety of leader holders, including insulation and Pips boxes. After a year or so, I find replacing the cork is worth while. It also helps to not overload them. Keeping them clean, keeping dirt out of the turning parts, is key to longevity.

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
i've used pips....i like them.....they keep your leaders straight and can hold like 20-25 on #1 type hooks......the cork board will wear our after many uses...others on the board have a reamdy for the problems....

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
Definitely try them out in the store before you buy them. Some of them work better than others and that never goes away. I've got good ones that have worked well for years and others that I dont know why I bother with.
Also if you are using leaders longer than 30 inches Pips arent the way to go

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
If you have trouble turning them, pop the inside part out and clean it out. There is a little bit of lube inside that attracts dirt. Be careful what kind of lube you put back in, you don't want it to deteriorate your leaders. But, if you're anything like me, I lose so many that they never stay in the holder long enough to go bad.

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
Take a big screwdriver and stick it in the hole when lined up and pop that thing apart.
From a department store you can buy cork board with a sticky back.
I've replaced several and they work okay. There must be a better system, but for $7 I'm not complaining too much.

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
I've used them before, the first one rusted my hooks when i let it remain wet for a few days, the second one is just about siezed up.
I use 2" by 3" ziplock bags. you can by them from McMaster-Carr. 100 for a dollar. i ussually keep a bunch of one line weight or hook size in a 4 by 6 bag. and they lie muy flat in my vest pocket.

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
Pips. Good. I've got at least one of every color, and wish they had more. An old style one I have with "LesDavis" printing on the top became hard to twist, but swapping lids with another fixed it. Fisherman's sometimes has them on sale for $5.99.

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
Pips R Great. When they get hard to turn, 80% of the time it is just the lid (ie: take the lid off and turn the inside by hand and it still turns easy). A little KY jelly along the inside lip of the lid and they are once again smooth as silk.
Sometimes due to dirt and grime you do need to take it apart and clean the insides but normally just try lubing up the lid.
I haven't tried to replace the cork yet. I'll have to try that on a couple of mine.
Tite lines,
Bob

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
I have a couple of them. Once they become hard to turn I just use a q-tip and rub a little vasaline on the inside lip while turning. Now I think it moves too easily.

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
The cork that works best for me is the gasket cork you can buy at any automotive parts place. Used a glass that fit just inside the leader dispenser as my template. The cork was pretty thin so I cut two pieces out and used contact cement. I think that it is actually better than new with the new cork. As mentioned above to clean. Should last 3 or 4 seasons, then re-tweek as needed. I must have 8 or 9 of these that I use for different salmon fishing and steelhead situations.

I use the Pips box. Love it! You can set up several to keep different size hooks and different pound test leaders. I wish they made one about half again bigger. Some days I lose alot of gear!

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
try using the insulation that comes shipped with computers. the nice white syrofome. cut it to what ever length you need to fit in your pocket. Free is a nice price too. plus when you loose your last bobber, take a needle and thread it through the same leader holder, that's what i call multitasking and kicking it up a notch.

Re: Anybody use Pips Leader Holders?
Pip’s are **** ! A friend of mine introduced them to me about five years ago. He told me that I needed to spend more time fishing rather then tying leaders while on the river. I own seven boxes now and have notice like everyone else here that they become hard to turn. Now I know how to fix them. Thanks for the info guys! The best thing about the pip’s is that I can fit about 35-40 egg looped rigs.
