crooked river cast-n-blast.
Well, I just got back from one of the most enjoyable weekend in recent memory. I think...I can't remember! Anyway, I fished with lilnorthfork and another and we had a blast. It was chilly with a light rain all day sat., but it did not deter the fish. There was an awesome hatch, make it 4 different ones all around us. So many fish sipping, porpoising, leaping. We all scratched our heads as we tried to match the hatches. We did pretty well fooling the fish now and then. Many nice chunky ones, which was a pleasant surprise for the Crooked. Sunday weather was dry and comfortable, and the hatchs once again where prolific. Many fish rised behind us right at the banks. what kind of cast do you do for that!!!! About size 20 mayfly patterns, BWO's ginger quill, quill gorden, hendriksons', we tossed the whole sink at them. We were all in that great zen state when it comes together and you not only catch fish, but it all just feels right. We even had the good bird karma and a big covy of chukar landed just across the river from us. Some poor shooting on my part, even missed the side of a barn. We did have some fresh bird to eat at the campsite. Does'nt get any better than that boys!
Great to fish with you Jon, thank god you flycast better that you tell a joke! The pleasure was all mine!
Tight lines!

Sound like a great time Brad. I've got to fish the Crooked more this winter. You picked the right spot to get out of the rain as it rain all day long at our place. Even had two mornings with a few snow flakes!

Hey guys, I've fished the crooked on march 20 and later. How does it fish in the winter (november-feb)? Better than the deschutes?

It is kinda fun to get there a little early and catch a few whities befor the hatch starts. Gives some variety and there are some pretty decent whities in there.

Re: crooked river cast-n-blast.
If you go fishing with GreenButt, bring 2 things: your laughin muscles, you'll need them and a spare raincoat, he'll need it.
Nothing like fighting a fiesty bow only to look up and down the stream and see your 2 fly partners with bent rods. You weren't kidding about throwing everything at them. Just because a trout pounced on a newly offered fly did not mean any others would be remotely interested. The winner for me was a very light quill gordon on a sunny sunday afternoon. 7 bows on one fly, 14 in all in a short stretch of time and a shorter stretch of river. It was kind of like hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to win the game 4-0... sweeeeet but a bit of frustration in the other 8 (not really though, it was a perfect day on a gorgeous river teeming with fish). Chukar and greens for dinner, trout, bacon and eggs for b-fast, plenty of imbibements to wash it all down with, and the most amazing 3wt. fishing I've ever experienced. Thanks!
Oh yeah, and how about that bird that played dead then up and ran away as you went to pick it up...
