Default Hand Tied or Store Bought Leaders

Hope you guys aren't getting sick of me!!!!

ok here goes:
1.Flourocarbon tippets
2.Store Bought leaders positives vs. negatives
3.Hand tied ( same as above )
4. If hand tied lengths of mono pieces and LB test.
3. I don't know the name of the knot and can't for the life of me figure out how to tie it. It's the loop knot that secures the leader to the main line. Should I be using this or tie directly to my fly line?

1. never had a problem with flourocarbon tippets - you just have to be really careful about the knots you tie.

2. I use store bough leaders exclusively for trout and smaller fish. Just too much time spent tying up leaders in very small diameters for trout.

3.For steelhead and salmon I tie my own. Not sure if it's just the way I was brought up or what. But, you find a formula (lengths, lb test, etc) that you like, and you stick with it. For swinging steelhead flies I only use Maxima spools. Buy one each in 40, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, and 8 lb. I'll try to find some formulas for leader lengths to post later...

4. Perfection Loop. I always use one, the only exception is for very spooky trout, clear water, etc. Then use the standard nail knot tied direclty to the leader.

1.Flourocarbon tippets: less visible and plenty strong, but more expensive, so I only use them where visibility is critical

2.Store Bought leaders positives vs. negatives: I can't taper a leader continuously without knots like a store bought, but dang, they can be pricy

3.Hand tied ( same as above ): I'm perfectly happy with my own leader formulas, can easily adjust length and action and the price is right, but when there are weeds, I'd prefer a knotless tapered store bought

4. If hand tied lengths of mono pieces and LB test.: too many options to list!

5. I don't know the name of the knot and can't for the life of me figure out how to tie it. It's the loop knot that secures the leader to the main line. Should I be using this or tie directly to my fly line? : Use a Nail Knot or TyMaster knot to attach a leader to the main line. Use a permanent heavy butt section of leader and replace the tippet at the first knot using either a barrel or double-barrel knot. The looped connection will hinge too much.

I might suggest Cabela's for tapered leaders. I have a great luck with these and they are less expensive than you'll find in a tackle shop.

Knots - for leader-to-leader or tippet knot - i use a surgeons knot. Ties straight, quick and strong - BUT doesn't work too well with fluorocarbon - that stuff is slippery. I agree with Pete on this - if visibility is not critical, I'd advise against it.

flourocarbon does not degrade like mono. If it gets left in the river, it stays for a long time potentially harming fish, birds, etc.

for everything you ever wanted to know about hand-tied leaders including formulas check out :
