2003 25hp Mecury Oil coming from prop area
2 Stroke took the prop off and it appears to be coming from above the shaft. I know ir isnt good. Just need an idea how much it's going to cost me to get it fixed. Thanks

Re: 2003 25hp Mecury Oil coming from prop area
can you tell if it's gear lube?smell, don't recommend taste.Should post to Boat tech.Providing nothing is cracked or broken a reseal job should not be to expensive on a 25hp motor.sources above bearing carrier, water pump seals, shift rod.have seen excess 2 stroke fuel drain from crankcase down exhaust and the fuel evaporates leaving oil.2c

Re: 2003 25hp Mecury Oil coming from prop area
You might want to try running some "tune up in a can" first. My old Merc 6hp was leaving a spot in my driveway, went to a shop to see about having the seals replaced and they suggested that first. If you are doing a lot of trolling with the motor, the oil is building up because it doesn't burn efficiently with the ethanol. I ran a can through my motor following instructions, it hasn't done dripped crud in my driveway since last spring.

First things first, what does the lower unit oil look like?
If it's clean, there's only one other place it could be from, which is your exhaust. If that were the case, I'd call it fairly normal for a two stroke.

I agree. It happens when you don't rev them up and troll alot.
I try to use mine hard for the last 300 yards or so on the way
back.

Re: 2003 25hp Mecury Oil coming from prop area
Trolled my 8 merc for 6 hours friday. Took it out of the water and I had probably 2 tbl spoons of a milky white oil coming from the exhaust and the prop area. Had me worried so I went home and drained lower unit, it was as clean as when I changed six months ago.
So if I run it hard after trolling this will go away?
What about my mix of oil and gas, 50 to 1. Would it help to go to maybe 40 or 30 to 1.
Motor is used only for trolling.

I would not change any specs from manufacturer, and the ratio's you mention i.e. 40:1 is actually adding more oil.Check with merc. on any ratio change before doing so.Powerheads are expensive.Try running it harder before pulling it out as mentioned in other post.

Re: 2003 25hp Mecury Oil coming from prop area
It was a milky grey color and yes i was crabbing yesterday all day at low rpm going from ring to ring. I do run 50 to 1 I looked this morning and it is not dripping any more. So maybe it isnt a seal leak. Thanks everyone.

Re: 2003 25hp Mecury Oil coming from prop area
I have a 96 Merc 25 and have seen the oil dripping from the exhaust after trolling all day. Now I make sure to run the motor at wot on plane for about 5 minutes before loading on the trailer and it hasn't done it since. Make sure you're using a high quality 2 stroke oil and get the mix as accurate as you can. I use a mix ratio bottle that shows exactly how much oil to put in it after I've put fuel in the tank. It helps a lot with keeping the smoke down too.

Good idea. I have a buddy that keeps a plastic measuring cup with
has oil. I can still se the measure on the oil container.
The smoke is not good. Good oil keeps the smoke down and keeps
the plugs from fouling. Make sure it's TCW3!

Keep doing what you are doing and don't worry about it. As mentioned earlier, itscommon for a 2 stroke.

It might be common, but eventually his 2 stroke will suffer in performance from plugged exhaust ports and fouled plugs if he doesn't get the unburnt oil to stop collecting.
