Default Maupin area of the Deschutes

I have not fished this area in many, many years and my son and I are going to do an over-nighter in early October. What I need to know is trout fishing still going on and what tips can you give me for steelhead in this area.
Thanks!
You interested cousin?

Best of luckt to you, good that you can take your son fishing, the catching will just be gravy.

Stop by The Deschutes Angler in Maupin. They are always very friendly and willing to share info on current conditions and hatches.

Try parking on the West side, down the side road that leads to the sewage treatment plant. From there, walk about 1/2 mile down the tracks and fish the west side of Oak Springs. Oops, did I give away my secret spot? Sorry. I meant to say, drive through Maupin towards Madras, then turn down the long dirt road to South Junction where there's excellent trout and steelhead water. Oops, I did it again! Have fun!

Thanks Pete! I fished South Junction a long time ago and if I remember correctly you walk up some RR tracks and then fish your way down. Lots of moss beds too.

i like to rig up a size 4 hairs ear with a 14 caddis puppa dropper. I hook both steelhead and trout with this rig. be sure to use 3x tippet for the 1st fly for steelhead and a 4x 5x for the dropper.

good luck,
cb

You might try gonig to the Oak Springs fish hatchery on the west side of the river.
Hike upto MP 51, there is a great strecth of river there.
Trout, Steelhead and Salmon.
The run is about a quater mile long.
Get's fish heavey at times on the weekend, but if you are going during the week it couldbe okay.
