Sardines
Does anyone know of a place that's selling sardines in bulk? I have one vacuum pack (of 2 sardines) left. It's time to restock!

Re: Sardines
Fergus McBarrens in Astoria on the peir. 25#'s box for $15.00. Just bought some last weekend and they are nice big and sassy looking. You can also buy herring down at the port a little ways away. Good luck.

Re: Sardines
Try Pacific Seafood on Powell in Portland. I can't remember what we paid last year but we got a bunch and they were the perfect filet size.

Re: Sardines
Ya I got mine at Pacific Seafood, 50lbs for $60. A little more expensive but I did not have to drive to the coast.

Re: Sardines
Fortunatly my trip was planned since I own property over in that neck of the woods. It's a nice drive and a great way to spend the day. $60 bucks is an outrage for $25lbs.

Re: Sardines
Pacific Seafood on about 36th an Powell. It's a $1.09 per non vac packed bag. There are 4 to 6 in a bag and they are good size for filets. Way better deal than other places. Better quality as well.

Re: Sardines
I haven't used Marie's Sardines but I am sure they are high quality. Another source that I have used and know are high quality is Sturgeon Paul's . Oregon Bait in Salem has good sardines in bulk too. All are packed two per package.

Re: Sardines
Just so you all know, that BULK Sardines in most cases, refers to CRAB BAIT QUALITY.
Is this what you really want?
BULK bait generally means (with sardines) the heads will be missing, bodies all frozen together, chopped up and 2-3 days old and soft bellies.
Is this what you want?
Now, I sell IQF sardines. Our sardines are fresh off the boat IQF (Individually Quick Frozen) and packed 50 pounds per box. This is considered 50 pounds IQF Bulk. Premium Sardines.
Is this what you want?

Re: Sardines
Just called Pacific Seafood. They no longer have the 50# boxes. Not sure when they will get them again. They do have cases of (40) 1lb. packs @ $1.59 per pack for $63.60/case. They do not split cases.
Anyone making a road trip to Astoria?
<edit> I called Pacific Seafood in Clackamas. Are you guys talking about Pacific Fish and Oyster on Powell? They have individual packs at $1.79 only.

Re: Sardines
CATCH AND EAT,
When ever you buy a bulk box of sardines you may run across a few heads missing (not all), all frozen together. (which alot of folks hate)
If you have the time and energy to un-thaw them, or pull them apart and sort out the bad ones, be my guest.
Thats up to you.
You only get what you pay for. Quality usually suffers, when you want a bargin.
Go for the Best Quality when buying your fishing bait.
Yes I can get small sardines when they are available.
Thanks for your comments,
Marie

Re: Sardines
I just picked up my order of Sturgeon Paul's Sardines. They are the best lookn' sardines I have seen. 3 per vacu. packed bag.
The only bummer was you had to buy 50 packs, so you may need to split the order with a friend.
But, I'm sure that Maries are just as high quality

Re: Sardines
You are right Marie, they are frozen together and it is a pain to partially thaw and then package them. But for me it ain't no biggy. However, my wife does'nt appreciate the smell while I'm doing it. When I look and see how the stores around here package the sardines I gotta think you offer a superior service over there in cheese-ville. Unfortunatly for me I am usually up in the Astoria area most of the time until fall approaches.
Let me know if you get the small trollable sardines. Great little secret weapons on the Willy for springers.

Re: Sardines
My dealings with Marie are- If she says its so, it is so ! If she says it will be there tomorrow, you can set your watch by it. If she says crawfish anise should work, you better hold your rod very tightly.
There are other bait dealers who carry quality products, no doubt. But when it comes to my $$$ I count on Marie first.

Re: Sardines
Not to diss ya or anything Marie but my sardines that I purchased in Astoria were nothing like what you alluded to. Heads in tact, tails in tact and looked great. You are correct that they are packed and frozen together which is no big deal to me. I'm cutting them up as filets anyhow so ain't no big thing. Caught a ton of fish on them last year and they scent up just fine.
Certainly they have not had the TLC you are honking about so I am sure your quality is "better". Just relating what I saw. Now if you are talking about a small sardine to troll with then we should talk for sure. BTW, do you carry the small sardines to troll with????
My advice to those that are buying by the case is look at what you are paying for before paying and make your decision. I am certain Marie offers a very fine product and knows what she is talking about as far as care the sardines she recieves goes. I wont de-bait her on that. BTW, those bulk sardines that you don't use during the season do make excellent crab bait as she mentioned.
Now for herring, that is a whole different matter. buy the best you can get your hands on. Spare no expense, the better the herring the more fish you shall recieve from Neptune.
