Question Hondas "Making Oil"

Seems like someone on here must know something about Hondas "making oil"
It seems that my 1986 8 horse must be doing it because it is way above the full mark and it wasn't that way after I changed it last year.

Cool Re: Hondas "Making Oil"

Smell it ... If it smells like gas you have some leaking past the rings ...
Otherwise it could be that you have a leaky head gasket if milky ...
Or you might just be mistaken ...
If you troll at low RPMs a lot it will unseat the rings ...
Run er like you stole her after changing the oil and see what happens ...

I had the same problem and it was a stuck thermostat. Easy fix.

Mine (1996) made oil all the time until I had a hotter thermostat installed and had the carb rejetted to run a little leaner. After that it was flawless as long as I had the boat.

making oil

bad fuel pump
bad t-stat
over propped
valves not adjusted

you need to run the motor WOT for 10 mins after trolling all day
that is why you do not use synth oil if you troll

Thanks, I'll change the oil and run it a little harder I guess. I am not recognizing the thermostat, if it has one, any clues?

This might be a clue:
The number "7" circled in blue is the thermostat location in early the 80's Honda 8 HP.
Maybe your's is similar?

Here's what it looks like on a '95 Honda 8 HP

IMO running your engine harder would take care of about 90% of the problems with making oil. For whatever reason, people are afraid to put some rpm in their engine. They think its better for the engine to run around at 1/3 throttle all the time. Trust me,if the manufacturer didn't want you running the engine at high rpm, they wouldn't design the engine to run there.

When I'm done trolling for the day,I put the screws to my T8 and run it at WOT for about 10 minutes. It gets the engine nice and hot and burns off any condensation in the crankcase. Trolling all day at 1000 rpm in the cold water of the NW and then just shutting down and going home isn't good for the engine.

The same thing applies for my F150.On the way back to the dock, I run it at as many rpm as the water allows for about 10 mnutes.

Don't baby your 4 strokes people!

seadog, I have an '86 Honda and it did the same exact thing. It was the thermostat. You also need to run the motor until it heats up, or the thermostat stayed closed and you ended up adding gas to your oil.
